Durban

Durban has been home from mid-February to the present and will continue to be until the beginning of September when I will be moving on.

During my time in Durban I've learned more about myself than I ever thought possible. I've also learned how to have fun after a rough couple of months.

Durban is REAL Africa, not that kitch touristy junk you see down in Cape Town. The people are real Africans trying to survive day to day. It has the feel of real Africa, from the dirty, busy streets to the houses with huge walls and gates around it.

The other night I even heard gunfire and watched a helicopter circle the area looking for someone. Yes, it is exciting that's for sure. Watch out for hijackings...

But for all its downsides, Durban is a city of life and character. Holding the biggest mosque AND the biggest mall in the Southern hemisphere, as well as the largest Indian population in the country, it's a truly multicultural city.

I started out by working in a restaurant and living in a backpacker before moving into a 105-year-old house and getting a job with an NGO. However, I didn't discover life until I moved into my present digs. You won't believe the trouble we get into...
