Personal role in relation to human rights and democracy
I actively participating in work groups on international and national issues of National Youth Council of Latvia. I have been involved in process of development of national youth policy and the draft of the States Conception on Work with Youth. Also in the process of national and international consultation on the EU White Paper on Youth Policy initiated by the EU Commissioner on youth issues Viviane Reding as leader of group from National Youth Council of Latvia.
I have just finished the long-term training course on organisation and project management. That was programme supported by the Netherlands’ government and organised by SAWA and Riga NGO Centre to support development of civil society in Latvia. Now I can work as an NGO consultant. I am focusing on youth work and consultation of youth organisations.
It involves human rights and democracy processes in global, however mostly I am concentrating on the social issues and minorities rights.
I am also looking for work with minorities and marginal groups, volunteering in their organisations.
Areas of particular interest for contribution
International Parenthood Planning Association have made the Charter on Sexual and Reproductive Rights. That vas developed on the basic human rights. Here is list of most important:
I am not going to say that I am expert on this issue but I am ready to start discussion on this topic and provide some explanation. Also I would like to inform about the IPPF / youth manifesto.
Youth social protection, also social economical rights.
In each country situation is different, especially there are differences between countries of EU / EEA and post-soviet countries, between North and South etc. However there are common issues for all, the same needs, the same wishes of young people.
I have chosen this one as I think that with that starts most of things. Before we are going discuss about sexual rights or social protection we should clarify the subject, understand what kind of information we already have about this issue, what else we need and how applicable is this information. On youth meetings we say a lot that we need more information, better information, more usable information.
There are different kind of minorities. In my country – Latvia people are mostly speaking about etnic minorities. But we can each group of society recognise as minority in comparement to all society. I would like to focus on social minorities, excluded or marginalised groups. I have particular interest on HIV/AIDS issues. This is connected to all previous topics – sexual rights as it could be transmitted during the sexual contact, social protection plays important role - accessabilty of social benefits and good health care as well as role of information – is information about HIV and protection available and suitable for us and for special groups of society. Drug users, sailors, sex workers, gays, men having sex with men as well as HIV+ persons are just few minority groups who are impotant to be recognised, and not only when HIV/AIDS is main topic. However everyone must concern to others with respect and tolerance therefore I have chosen this topic for discussions too.
