The General Insurance Corporation of India is the organization that provides overseas insurance along
with it's subsidiary companies. The following are the types of policies available for overseas travel.
Overseas Mediclaim Policy
This policy can be taken to secure oneself against medical calamities while staying/travelling in a foreign
nation. The policy covers Medical expenses upto $100000, repatriation upto $100, Personal accident during
the flight upto $10000 and Loss of passport for upto $150. It is also now a mandatory requirement with
regards to applying for Visas to some of the nations. The policy can be taken while on tour in a foreign
nation for Business or Holiday or Employment or Study purpose.
For Business or Holiday purpose:
The coverage is $100,000 for medical expenses. The same will be restricted to $10,000 if medical reports
are not submitted. Some of the medical reports required are Complete Blood Count, ECG, Fasting Blood Sugar,
etc. The maximum age limit is 70 years.
For Employment or Study purpose:
The coverage is $75,000. Passport details and details of Visa and their validity is also to be mentioned.
The other requirements include the details of sponsor, employer, duration of stay/study etc. The maximum
age limit is 60 years.
The policy does not cover the following:
> Any treated or existing diseases prior to one year of commencement of risk, whether declared or not.
> War/Nuclear perils.
> For children below the age of 5 years the following diseases are not permissible for claim: Chicken pox,
measles, German measles, spina bifida, whooping cough, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, menimalitis and scarlet
fever.
> Travel against medical advice, travel for treatment, terminal prognosis or awaiting special treatment.
Cosmetic surgery, pregnancy-related costs, AIDS.
> Suicide or attempted suicide.
> Benefits recoverable from any other scheme.
> Examination/ treatment carried out in India.
> Expenses incurred outside country of study or employment.
Videsh Yatra Mitra
Videsh Yatra Mitra is another Overseas Mediclaim Scheme. This policy offers other extra benefits such as:
1. Personal Accident
2. Medical expenses and repatriation
3. Loss of checked baggage
4. Delay of checked baggage
5. Loss of Passport
6. Personal liability
Personal Accident
In the event of the accidental death of the insured or on injury which results in Permanent Total Disability
or Loss of eye(s) or limb(s). The cover is provided for an amount of US $ 25000.If there is death of an insured
below the age of 16 years the cover is restricted to US $2000 only.
Medical Expenses and repatriation
This benefit is available in the following manner, depending on the area of travel. If the area of travel is
Worldwide (excluding USA & Canada) then the cover is restricted to US $ 250,000 and if it is Worldwide
(including USA & Canada), then the same is US $ 500,000. An amount of US $100 is deductible in case of any
claim. All other terms and conditions as per the standard Overseas Mediclaim Policy.
Loss Of Checked Baggage
If your international carrier losses your baggage totally, then this policy will provide for a claim amount not
exceeding US $ 1000.
However the following claim will not be entertained: Partial loss/damage (Total loss/damage of individual
unit of baggage will not be deemed as excluded). Claim for items valued in excess of US $ 100 without proof
of ownership.
Delay Of Checked Baggage
Any loss or damage after 12 hours of arrival at the destination of the international carrier is covered under
this policy. The cover is for US $100.
Loss Of Passport
The benefit covered under this policy is actual expenses incurred in a foreign land in obtaining duplicate
passport or alternate travel document. The cover is limited to US $250, with US $30 being deductible on the
claim amount.
However the claim will not be valid in the following cases:
# Loss or damage to passport due to confiscation or detention by customs, police or other authorities.
# Theft not reported to the police within 24 hours of discovery.
# Loss or theft of passport left unattended by the insured.
Personal Liability
Any personal liability arising that is attaching in a private capacity for bodily injury to third party and/or
damage to third party property during the course of insured's overseas travel is covered under this policy to
the extent of US $200000, with US $200 being deductible from the claim.
If the insured feels the need for an extension of the policy then it can be done provided the following
conditions are satisfied:
The original policy period has not expired
There is no claim on the original policy
Declaration of good health required
The total extension including original period should not exceed 360 days
