*** Star Light, Star Bright ***

"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight."

Kelly recited the words in her head. She was once again stargazing, her favourite pastime. She knew all the constellations, Orion's belt, the saucepan, the southern cross... she had a huge map of them on her bedroom ceiling. However it was not as good as the real thing, being out in the open with only the stars and the moon lighting the night. She loved the company of the crickets, and the sound they made as they did their nighttime rounds. She shifted fro, her position in the grass, focusing on the stars just above the moon. It was a perfect night, one she would share, if she could. Kelly was alone. She lived only with her father in a country house, no other buildings around for miles. She had no friends, no pets and no relatives that could be bothered to come all the way out to their home. She sighed, wishing for a friend. The poem snaked it's way back into her head.

"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight." She closed her eyes, wrapped up in the feeling. She pictured a friend, someone to share her thoughts with. Then she opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was a star. Not any old star, one brighter than the rest. She thought back to her star map... no, it was not on there. She squinted at it closely... it was getting bigger! Growing, right in front of her eyes! That must mean... but the scientists said stars weren't supposed to collide with earth for another 10,000,000 years!  She looked back at the star, now it was even bigger than the moon! Suddenly, it whizzed past her ear, landing on the ground, smoke coming out of it. She looked at it carefully, bits of moon rock crumbling away. In place of the star was a round object, it was like a chicken's egg, only larger. And there was a star on the egg too. What could it all mean? She studied it closely. Then, mind whirring, she sat back down to examine the egg closely.
