Singh Wins Buick Open: 31 July 2005

Singh followed up three spectacular rounds with an average one and it was enough to win his third Buick Open, holding off a surging Woods. Singh closed with a final-round 70 for a four-stroke victory and a 24-under 264 total.

The 42-year-old Fijian has won four events this year and 28 in his career. Singh trails only Woods' 44 victories and leads Phil Mickelson by two among active PGA TOUR players.

Singh's five-shot lead was his largest entering a final round. The four times he led by three after 54 holes, he won each event, including the 2000 Masters.

The large cushion allowed him to play conservatively, making two birdies and 16 pars.

Tiger Charges to Number 1 Spot: 15 July 2007

Tiger Woods solidified his No. 1 position with his victory at the British Open. He now holds a 4 plus point edge over Vijay Singh in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Singh moves closer to Nr 1 spot
After good showing at EDS Byron Nelson Championship. May 15, 2005, Irwing, TX: The trophy went to Ted Purdy , ranked No. 173 in the world, who played methodical golf for a one-shot victory over rookie Sean O'Hair (ranked No. 324!) who was leading on 3rd day.

Vijay Singh finished strong as always, with an ace on 195-yard 17th hole with a 7-iron, and a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 65. He tied for third, going over $5 million for the third straight year.

Singh needed to finish alone in third to replace Tiger Woods at No. 1 in the world, although he likely will get there over the next two weeks when neither are playing.

Tiger re-claims No 1 spot after Victory in the Masters

Tiger Woods captured No. 1 after his Masters victory in April, ending Singh's brief three-week stay atop the rankings.

Singh reclaims No 1 spot! 20.3.2005

Vijay Singh reclaimed the No. 1 ranking Sunday at the Bay Hill Invitational, but definitely not in the way he had hoped. For the second week in a row, Singh threw away a chance at victory with an uncharacteristic but crucial late mistake. This time, he handed the win to a stumbling Kenny Perry when his final approach shot hit the rocks in front of the final green and caromed into the water, leading to a double-bogey. Tiger Woods lost the No. 1 spot by finishing tied for 23rd place along with Ernie Els, who also lost a chance to go to No. 1.  Singh has now 12.29 points in the World Rank List, Woods is close behind with 12.09!

In the process, Woods, who finished at 24-under 264 to break by one shot the tournament record, also padded his lead in the latest U.S. Ryder Cup points standings. Vijay Singh had a good last round to finish 3rd.

Singh takes title at the Sony Open in Hawaii
Jan. 16, 2005

HONOLULU -- A forgotten figure most of the week despite his No. 1 ranking, Vijay Singh showed up when it counted Sunday with a routine birdie on the final hole to cap off a 5-under 65 and win the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Singh never had the lead at breezy Waialae Country Club until he hammered a 300-yard drive on the par-5 18th, hit a utility club just short of the green and took two putts to avoid a playoff against hard-charging Ernie Els.

It was the kind of start to the 2005 season Singh wanted, coming off nine victories last year. And he was still smarting from a final-round triple bogey at Kapalua last week that cost him a chance to win the season-opening Mercedes Championships.

"Everybody thinks, 'Is he going to win again?' That could work against me," Singh said. "I think this is going to help. This is a great relief that I can start breathing again and go and play more comfortable the rest of the season. I'm looking forward to the rest of it. This is what I needed."

Singh finished at 11-under 269, and the $864,000 first-place check returned him to the top of the money list. With all the talk of the "Big Three," the 41-year-old Fijian showed he's still the man to beat.

The $10 Million Man

Vijay Singh became the first player to amass $10 million in a single season Sunday with a resounding five-shot victory in the Chrysler Championship, where he also set a new tournament scoring record of 18-under 266. With six wins in his last eight starts, Singh hopes to close out his amazing year with a 10th victory in the Tour Championship this week at East Lake.

Singh sets money record with eighth win

Vijay Singh is leaving little doubt in anyone's mind who's the No. 1 golfer in the world. Singh shook off a challenge from Stewart Cink on Sunday at the 84 LUMBER Classic to claim his eighth PGA TOUR title of 2004.

Singh shot 3-under 69 in the final round, good enough to give him a one-stroke margin of victory.

With his latest triumph, Singh also breaks the PGA TOUR single-season record for official earnings previously set by Tiger Woods in 2000.

Singh wins Deutsche Bank, takes over No. 1 ranking from Tiger

NORTON, Mass. (AP) -- Vijay Singh won a head-to-head matchup with Tiger Woods to end his record reign atop golf's ultimate leaderboard.

Singh shot a 69 to beat Woods and Adam Scott by three strokes in the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday, clinching the No. 1 ranking in the world with a sixth victory of the year. Woods had been first for more than five years -- a record 264 consecutive weeks.

Singh took a three-stroke lead into the final round, but he and Woods were tied at 13 under when Woods bogeyed the 13th hole at the par-71, 7,415-yard TPC of Boston. Singh birdied 15 to pull ahead by two strokes and then added two birdies on the final two holes to finish 16 under and clinch the $900,000 first prize

Scott, the defending champion, started the day seven strokes behind Singh before making the turn with four consecutive birdies to get into contention. He birdied the 18th hole to finish 13 under, and Woods matched him; John Rollins and Daniel Chopra were another two strokes back at minus 10.

Singh is the top winner on the tour this year with six victories, including the PGA Championship, and $7,889,566 in earnings. He needed only to finish ahead of Woods to take over the No. 1 ranking that he has been closing in on all year.

The computer rankings factor in performance over the past two years, taking the strength of field into account; Woods held a 12.09-11.91 lead heading into this week. The new numbers were expected to be released later Monday, but Singh's move to No. 1 was assured.

Singh wins for charity

NORTON, Mass. -- Vijay Singh was named this week's CRESTORŽ (rosuvastatin calcium) Charity Challenge winner for his first-place standing entering the final round of Deutsche Bank Championship. Singh fired a 3-under 68 on Sunday to open a three-shot lead at the 54-hole mark.

The CRESTORŽ Charity Challenge is a season-long weekly competition that recognizes the tournament leader entering the final round at most PGA TOUR events throughout the year. Through this first-of-its kind program, AstraZeneca and its CRESTOR product will donate approximately $3 million a year to designated health care and PGA TOUR charities. At each of the selected tournaments, a $100,000 contribution will be made.

For Singh's performance, AstraZeneca, on behalf of its CRESTOR product, will donate $50,000 to the MGA ForeKids in Singh's name. An additional $50,000 will also be donated to the health-care charity of his choice.
