VJ  CHARGER SPORTSMAN
History & Spotters guide
The Charger Sportsman was introduced during the VJ model run.there were approximately 399 of which 232 were manual cars and 167 were automatic.

All sportsman were based on the current VJ XL model, but had some 770 options, namely the W36 styled road wheels, 3spoke sports steering wheel, and the 770 style taco dash with the black bezel.

All sportsman had the same speciall one off  red tartan interior (called Wimbleton Plaid  - the paint code ont the compliance is W1 for white )  and bright red carpet Also the top of the door drims had a Sportsman Script similar in style to the VH's 770 or RT size & style interior badge.

Mechanically all sportsmans were fitted with the 265 hemi, the only options being the choice of 3 speed automatic or 4speed manual, aircon  to date i have not seen any  power steer version.

Exterior there is no mistaking a sportsman, it is basically vintage red ( code RP 4624 ), but has white accents  ( code WB 4558 ) on the roof and also on the wheel arches and between the tail lights.  The compliance plate also caries the sportsman option code of A23.

Only other unusuall feature was it also carried the 770's front sway bar

The sportsman was a limited run special, designed by chrysler to stimulate the sales of the charger, production had droped from the Hey-Days of the VH and since the killing of the RT's, many people believe it contained left over parts from the RT- days, but these were standard mechanical cars, indeed many were treated as spots cars and recieved a very fast life style.

Currenty thesy are collectable dues to the fact of there vareity, the same as the VK white knoghts and the CL drifter chargers, all of these limited run cars while at the time noting secail have now fiund a new level of desirabiliy
Is it a real Sportsman  ???

Only one sure fire way to tell - Cheque the option codes   A23 tell you it is a sportsman
