Eitel hut is located on the plateau about 13 km from the main station. It comprises a fibreglass 'Apple' which was flown in by helicopter during the annual re-supply visit and a wooden cold porch. These small huts sleep two comfortably (three in an emergency) and are fitted with a gas cooker, 12 volt wind generator, 240v petrol generator, HF & VHF radios and a comprehensive medical kit as well as plenty of food & fuel stocks. After a day of tough walking in the field, these small huts are a very, very welcome sight indeed. There are three plateau huts (Eitel, Tiobunga & Windy Ridge); their main function is to provide a base for the six Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife rangers stationed on the island who are presently engaged in the feral cat eradication programme. The plateau huts are temporary & are likely to be removed once the few remaining cats on the island are dealt with. .
