Since early European settlement here in Australia this country has undergone massive changes I always fail to understand why a continent such as ours with its unique flora and fauna, biodiversity, geographical isolation and climate has been so mindlessly abused and taken for granted from day one. It is about time a proper re-assessment of damage/and damage already done that still continues today is way overdue. We all must have a little foresight, unless we act now generations to come will end up living in an environment less diverse and more polluted than their forbears. Sending the Environment and all that lives within it a get well soon card simply wont work. We really haven’t learnt much in the past 25 million odd years+/- of evolution some of the things we have done and are still doing to this planet not to mention our own kind only makes me wonder? have we evolved any further than say the Java or Neanderthal man? We just don’t seem to turn our mistakes into Lessons. Modern man is so driven by greed and hell bent on his own destruction. Unfortunately Evolutionary co-existence is not an inherent process when it comes to modern man but within the animal kingdom it is alive and well what do you think makes them so successful? ( we can all learn from this ) Not to many people are aware of the results to date that Australia sits near the top of the list when it comes to species destruction. What a shameful way we have treated our country Introduction of foreign species, deforestation, fragmentation, pollutants and other harmful processes have all played a major role in what has shaped this country to what we know it as today. All are obviously a direct result of little to no reaserch, lack of knowledge of proper conservation, land management etc . Foreign species have no direct relation to Australia’s unique biodiversity they simply do not fit in. Australia has suffered greatly since early white settlement, also i must mention the impact it had on the indidgenous inhabitants as well as the flora/fauna. I think in many cases we fail to fully understand the meaning of the word EXTINCT. Fragmentation of native scrub, salinization, desertification due to overgrazing and many other destructive processes put a huge strain on both Flora and Fauna. Habitat destruction has and still is continuing on a large scale. These are some of the things we must take a serious look at. There is no easy solution to Environmental impact in some cases but there is a lot that can be done to either improve or rectify the situation. This can only be achieved by proper human management If you ask me is our Environment in peril? My answer would be yes Its as obvious as the nose on your face open your eyes and look around nature cannot always compensate for the greed of man. Stu Clutten.... |
