You are about to embark on a learning experience in astrology. We are so glad to have you and hope you will participate with us, offer your opinions and suggestions. This is your ezine, as well as mine and I want everyone to be pleased with what is published monthly, and sometimes more often.

We had good input from our last issue on medical issues and hope to present more information as it comes to light. We have a listing of more books on medical astrology for those of you who wish to learn more. I have been so busy using the Medical Encyclopaedia, I completely forgot some of the other books in my own bookcase, i.e. Message of The Stars by Hiendel, which carries a medical part in at the end of the book which is quite good. In fact, their whole book is good and one I learned from 25 years ago. If you don't have this one, you are missing some good astrological information that is not covered in other books.

Other books of interest are:

    INTERPRETING THE INTERCEPTIONS

    "THE POLARITIES"

    The Cancer-Capricorn Interception

    NORMAL BEHAVIOR PATTERN

The house with Cancer on the cusp is where you need security more than any other area of life. Here you need to feel nurtured and need to belong or be accepted for what you do in these house matters. Once you are secure in this area you will nurture and help others in these house matters. . . first, at a personal (Cancer) level and then at a social (Capricorn opposite polarity.)

At first you may be defensive over these affairs because you are afraid of losing those things to which you have become accustomed to emotionally. Thus you cling to the people and things of this house expecting them to protect you instead of finding personal security through the experiences of this house.

You approach the matters of this house in a nurturing, mothering way, even though those affairs may not be usually associated with parenting. In Capricorn you are also concerned with security.

Cancer concerns itself with PERSONAL security. Capricorn concerns itself with SOCIAL security and acceptance.

In Capricorn you establish your SOCIAL territory in order to find security within your total realm. . . i.e. Capricorn on the 8th - I find my social acceptance as an astrologer. . . my social turf I have marked off is in that part of society that affiliates with astrology. That is how I find my social acceptance . . . through my social turf marked off as astrology. The house with Capricorn on the cusp is where you want to mark off your SOCIAL TURF and you will want to mark it off through affairs intended by that house . . . in the affairs of that house you are territory conscious and want to mark off your territory just as a cat does. Here is where you need to feel secure from a SOCIAL point of view . . . being accepted socially for what you do in these house matters.

The Cancer - Capricorn polarity deals with personal security and emotion versus social security and ambition. Cancer helps you build the emotional strength needed to support your Capricorn social image and accomplishments . . and to define your social place.

    INTERCEPTED BEHAVIOR PATTERN

When Cancer is intercepted you tend to concern yourself with personal security in the matters of the house where Cancer is intercepted. You do not use the Capricorn polarity by seeking your social potential.

In the house with the Capricorn interception you block the emotional, sensitive, nurturing side of your nature for fear of social ridicule. You may give up personal security in order to have social acceptance.

In the house with the Cancer interception, you are unable to structure your emotions creatively . . . you either over-react to emotional experiences OR inhibit emotional expression altogether. Your environment does not offer the security you need in these house matters so you have to build a secure, emotional foundation through subjective development of other obscure channels.

You may have to break away from old attachments connected with this house in order to find your own emotional security. Others may not recognize your emotional needs, your sensitivity, your emotional vulnerability in this area of your life. Since Gemini is actually on the cusp of the house where Cancer is intercepted, others think you are flexible, changeable and adaptable. They see your mental needs (Gemini) but not your emotional needs (Cancer.) They do not recognize your emotional vulnerability in this area of life. They see your APPARENT flexibility and changeability. Through active mental activities connected with this house you will confront your own emotions. You will do so internally, and because of this, you will lack objectivity (seeing reality) in these house matters.

You accumulate ideas about these matters and you gain experiences (Gemini), but you hold on too long to people and things connected with this house. You then experience a psychological over-load. This forces you to define boundaries and set limits . . . and to learn to let go and see things more objectively.

Cancer needs the structuring of Capricorn, and, Capricorn needs the warmth of Cancer. When Capricorn is intercepted, it is hard to project warmth and understanding into the affairs of the house where Capricorn is intercepted. You don't feel the emotional security of Cancer here.

Either you build your Capricorn wall so rigidly you imprison yourself within them OR you don't build any emotional structures at all in this area of life and find yourself left out in the cold. You can be so concerned with what people will say that you surprise your true feelings about the experiences described in this house.

You may be afraid to bend in these matters feeling you will reveal your own vulnerability. Are you too dependent on society's opinion here that you neglect others who love you most? Is social protocol more important than the projection of real human warmth? Or have you failed to build structures in this area of life which merit social respect? Do you feel you deserve more recognition in this area of life? Are you unable to define your social place in these house matters?

Having Sagittarius on the cusp of the house intercepted by Capricorn means that it is important for you to set goals here which involve the future. The Capricorn interception challenges you to go a step further. You also have to build the kind of structures you need to make these goals a reality. You need freedom in this area of life to grow and expand. You need to know when to stop expanding (Sagittarius) and start building (Capricorn.) The ideas of Sagittarius need to become realities of Capricorn. Yet with the Capricorn interception you may have trouble with this. You may also have trouble defining your social territory not knowing where you belong. Relationships to parents or the relationship between your parents may seem obscure to you. Their impact on your life is more than it may appear in this area of life.

Next month we will continue with the Leo - Aquarius interceptions.

    SPOTLIGHT -From our Readers:

    COMMENTS - ARTICLE
    from Cathleen Vernon

Hi, this is about the article on Medical Astrology. It was a very good article.

I have a question, though, and it ties in to a chart of the surgery of a friend of mine.

She had gallbladder surgery on November 28, 2001 at 9:00 AM EST in Camp Hill, PA

    Gallbladder is ruled by Cancer.

My friend is an Aries with a Capricorn Moon.

She had a horrible surgery. The surgeon screwed up, the bile duct was injured and leaked bile into her abdomen and she wound up with peritonitis. We, her friends, were screeching bloody murder at the doctors and staff to do something, but we had no legal standing. The surgeon insisted that she was just being a baby and was unable to monitor her pain at home. Heck, WE knew she probably was leaking bile into her gut and we aren't even doctors!!! Then the surgeon decided that he must have missed a stone in the duct. He didn't find one, and said there was nothing else he could do so we called her son to come from far away. Once he got there, as a family member, he raised the roof and another doctor was brought in. My friend had a second emergency surgery, which fixed the original problem. She is still not 100% but is on the road to recovery.

I went through the questions listed in your article, because my friend chose her date for surgery astrologically. There were only two dates to choose from in the month of November, and this was the better of the two. The other date was within the three-day window before the New Moon (which wasn't listed in your article, but something found in a medical astrology text.)

Any way, going with your questions:

No operations at the Full Moon-- operation was 2 days before the full moon.

    Moon waxing-- yes.

Moon should not be in the sign of your natal Moon-- Her natal moon is in Capricorn. Moon was not in that sign.

Moon should not be in the sign ruling the organ-- In her case, the gallbladder, which is ruled by Cancer. Moon was not in that sign.

Major operations are very dangerous if Moon is in the sign of the organ AND is conjunct, square, parallel or opposite Neptune, Uranus, Saturn or Mars-- This is a "two pronged test" -- Moon was not in Cancer (gallbladder) but it WAS square Neptune. No aspects of any kind to Uranus, Saturn or Mars.

No operations when the Moon is applying to a square or opposition to Sun, Saturn or Mars-- No.

Moon should be increasing in light-- yes.

Moon should be sextile or trine Jupiter or Venus. Moon was sextile Jupiter and no aspect to Venus. Jupiter, however, was retrograde.

Moon should not be afflicted by Mars or applying to any aspect of Mars-- this Moon had no aspect to Mars at all.

Moon should be in a fixed sign-- Yes, it was-- Taurus.

Moon should not be on the Asc.-- it was not on the Asc.

The Sun should not be in a sign ruling the organ-- Sun was in Sagittarius. Gallbladder is ruled by Cancer.

She had several positive indicators in place: The Moon was between New and Full, therefore waxing, but not yet Full, it was in a fixed sign (Taurus), and the Moon was sextile Jupiter (although Jupiter was retrograde).

The only negative factor was the "two-pronged" question above-- and she didn't meet BOTH conditions. The only condition met was that the Moon was square Neptune.

And I'm beginning to think that was a blessing, because Neptune rules drugs, and the pain medication they were giving her did not dull her pain. These were very strong pain meds, and they didn't work at all-- the Moon square Neptune aspect. She was in horrible pain. That is what kept us all fighting for further diagnosis and treatment. If the drugs had given her relief from her pain, she probably would have died after returning home after the first surgery (she lives alone).

Do you have any further insights on this? Thank you!

After corresponding with Cathleen, she replied with:

    Marianne:

Thank you for responding so quickly!

In A Handbook of Medical Astrology, Jane Ridder-Patrick (Arkana, 1990), p. 103 the gallbladder is listed at several degree points-- it merely says Cancer/Capricorn... when I looked for further clarification, I found on p. 73 that Capricorn ruled skin, and that Cancer ruled the mucus membranes from mouth to anus. The Capricorn degree areas seemed to be all leg bones and muscles. The Cancer degree areas seemed to be in the right area of the body to find the gallbladder.

I further confused myself by referring to a website http://www.uq.net.au/~zzlianne/bodyrule.htm that says PLUTO rules the gallbladder, and research on other websites puts bodily fluids (like bile) with Cancer and Capricorn was associated with "hard" things like bones, structure, the skeleton, and the area of the knees.

Back to my book, and looking further, on p. 71, it plainly states that the gallbladder is ruled by Capricorn. I missed this.

So I apologize for my mistake. Can you recommend a definitive source, in print or on the Web, for rulership of specific body parts? I thank you in advance.

I have taken note of the parallels for that day.

The natal info. of my friend is: April 8, 1950, 9:00 PM PST, Port Townsend, WA, USA.

    Again, I thank you.

======>I wrote to Cathleen for further information about the second surgery. But, first let me point out the problems I have found with the first surgery.

    Aspects for 1st surgery:

  • ===>Operation done on Saturn Planetary Hour!

*The Gallbladder is ruled by Saturn & Capricorn!

  • ===>Ascendant of surgery chart at 29°11' Sagittarius. This is one of the degree of tears!

Fortunately, Chiron was conjunct the Ascendant at 28°35' Sagittarius. I might add here that Chiron was also conjunct her progressed Ascendant, but more on her natal chart later.

  • ===>3rd Hour of Mercury Day! *Mercury rules the 6th house of health.
  • ===>Mercury rules patient's 8th house of surgery!
  • ===>Mercury and Saturn were parallel!
  • Moon was increasing in light.
  • Moon was in a fixed sign.
  • Moon was trine Jupiter.
  • ===>Moon was square Neptune!
  • ===>Saturn was in square aspect to her natal Saturn!
  • ===>Saturn & Venus were contra-parallel natally!
  • ===>Saturn & Venus were parallel by progression and Contra-parallel to her MC during the surgery!

NOTE: For those who have asked about the rulership of the different things in Astrology, I highly recommend:

    The Rulership Book
    By Rex E. Bills

    Further rules state:
Do not cut a nerve when Mercury is afflicted. I wondered if this was part of her pain problems?

I also noted that the Moon was at 08°54' Taurus inconjunct the Sun at 06°24' Sagittarius. There is no mention of this aspect in the Medical Encyclopaedia. However it is a health aspect and usually indicates some type of adjustment.

The other factors mentioned in your letter do not need repeating here. However, the confusion over the rulership does. The "bile", according to the Encyclopaedia of Medical Astrology states-[quote]
    >>The Bile is ruled by Saturn, Mars, Mercury, and the N. Node and the sign of Scorpio. The Gall Bladder, the reservoir of the Bile is ruled by Saturn, and as a receptacle, by the Moon.[snip]

In another paragraph entitled "All Diseases--Of the Gall" Mars diseases, and due to Mars afflictions<< [end quote]

Then, a few days later I received the following email from Cathleen:

2nd Surgery was a week later, the 5th of December. I believe I recall the actual time of surgery to be 8:00 PM-- they called nurses who had gone home to come back to the hospital at 7:00 PM. Same hospital, same town, different doctor.

I have tried several sources to obtain Dr. Cornell's book-- so far I have not found anyone who has it, but one place I tried in the western U.S. thinks they may be able to get it for me later this year. However, everyone I talked to said that it's the best book on the subject and that no book on medical astrology written since then can top it.

    Thanks for your ongoing efforts!

    Cathleen

====>Thank you Cathleen and here are the aspects to the second surgery.

    Aspects of 2nd surgery:

  • 2nd surgery done on a Mercury Hour.
  • 3rd Hour of a Mercury-Night.
  • Moon is in Leo, a fixed sign, ruling the Ascendant.
  • ===>Moon decreasing in light!
  • ===>Moon opposes Mars!
  • ===>Moon opposes Uranus!
  • ===>Moon contra-parallel Neptune!

We have another 29°06' Ascendant, this time in Cancer. Chiron was at 29°22' Sagittarius in the 6th house.

In the last issue I discussed the surgery on two different people, but did not go into detail about their natal charts. This time, I will go one step further because we need to see the whole picture. When looking at this patient's chart, we find her 8th house of surgery is Gemini, thus the importance of Mercury during this entire encounter.

A female, born April 8, 1950 at 9:00 pm in Port Townsend WA. Her progressed Moon was semi-sextile the 29° Ascendant in the first surgery. In the second surgery it was trine the 29°Ascendant which I feel was a blessing in disguise.

Mercury has a tight sextile to Venus, sextile and contra-parallel to Jupiter, a sextile to Uranus and a trine/parallel to her MC. Her Mercury is in her 6th house at 01°27' Taurus...therefore ruling naturally, and by the very fact of tenanting the 6th house.

She is also on a Saturn square, from Gemini to her natal placement in Virgo. She is certainly dealing with Saturn issues!

Actually, the aspects here were worse. I wrote back to Cathleen asking the current condition of her friend and she wrote:

    Hi, Marianne!

My friend's second surgery was more successful than the first-- a nuclear medicine internist did the repairs. She is not 100%, and has a "knot" in her side -- a palpable lump. The doctor said that the bile that leaked into her gut has not reabsorbed itself as well as it should have by now, and apparently her liver function is in need of support via medication.

She is frustrated-- her words to me were that her liver was working just fine before this debacle... Anyway -- I don't know if I can get the doctor to cough up his Sun sign, lol...

She is back to work, she is eating, and she has been coming to astrology lessons.

Do you think Saturn Rx is the problem?

Thank you again for all the work you have done on this.

    Cathleen

    ===>Cathleen:

I investigated further regarding the liver problem. Since it is not functioning properly I looked up Sluggish Liver which referred me to Torpid Liver, meaning sluggish or inactive. It states, again this is the work of Saturn and lists the following causes:

  • Saturn afflicted in Virgo - not the case here.
  • Excessive use of any drug ruled by Mercury and Gemini, as Gemini is the opposite sign to Sagittarius, the sign which rules the liver.

Now, the medications would have to be checked out as to their rulerships.

However, when you look at her first surgery, we find the rising sign as 29°11' Sagittarius! Looking at the second surgery, we found Venus, Sun, Mercury, Vertex, Pluto and the S. Node spanning from 4°30' Sagittarius through 27°12' Sagittarius with the Sun and Mercury in opposition to Saturn.

I did a bit of investigating with the Arabic Parts which I found very interesting. Her first surgery, the Part of Surgery for that surgery chart fell at 18°34' Aries, conjunct her natal Sun! On her second surgery, the Part of Surgery for that chart fell at 12°28' Scorpio, conjunct her natal Ascendant. Rather amazing where these Parts work!

Also, one further answer . . no, I do not believe Saturn being retrograde was the bad influence here. I believe the above speaks for itself. Comments, anyone??

COMMENT: I would like to quote to you, the reader, a special notation from Message of The Stars, page 680, last paragraph:

    [snip]

"Treatments received on the day and in the hours of the planets which are well aspected in the patient's horoscope are always more powerful and beneficial than they would be if given in the hours and on the days ruled by planets afflicted when he was born."

    SPECIAL NOTE:

Because this book is hard to find, I will quote the Rules for all to have. The book is priceless. Find it if you can. This is quoted from:

    ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MEDICAL ASTROLOGY
    by Howard Leslie Cornell, M.D.

    [quote] RULES FOR OPERATIONS

Statistics show that operations are more successfully performed when the Moon is increasing in light, between the New and Full Moon, and heal more quickly, and are less liable to complications than when the Moon is past the full and decreasing. Note the following Rules---

    (1) Operate in the increase of the Moon if possible.

    (2) Do not operate at the exact time of the Full Moon,
as the fluids are running high at this time.

    (3) Never operate when the Moon is in the same sign as
    at birth.

    (4) Never operate upon that part of the body ruled by the
sign thru which the Moon is passing at the time, but wait
a day or two until the Moon passes into the next sign below,
and especially if the Moon be in conjunct, square or opposition
Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, or Mars at the time. This rule should
be especially followed in major operations. Ptolemy says,
"Pierce not with iron that part of the body which may be
governed by the sign actually occupied by the Moon".
    (5) Do not operate when the Moon is applying closely to the
square or opposition the Sun, Saturn or Mars.
    (6) Let the Moon be increasing in light and in sextile or
trine Jupiter or Venus, and not afflicted by Mars.

    (7) Let the Moon by in a fixed sign, but not in the sign
ruling the part to be operated upon, and such sign of the
Moon also not on the Asc.

    (8) Do not operate when the Moon is applying to any aspect
of Mars, as such tends to danger of inflammation and
    complications after the operation.

    (9) Avoid operation when the Sun is in the sign ruling the
part upon which the operation is to be performed.

    (10) Never operate when the Moon is combust, or within 17°
of the Sun, and with the Moon opposition Mars at the
    same time.

    (11) The Moon should be free from all manner of impediment.
    (12) Jupiter, Venus, and the ruler of the Asc. should be
in the Asc. or in the M.C., if possible and free from Mars
    affliction.
    (13) Fortify the Sign ruling the part of the body to be
    operated upon.

    (14) A Mars hour is evil for surgical operations.

    (15) Do not cut a nerve when Mercury is afflicted.[unquote]

    COMMENTS - ARTICLE

    Hi Marianne,

Please forgive me if I'm intruding but I read your post about your friend and the female problems, with another surgery ahead for her. This happened to my sister some years ago, and she was about to have another surgery to have an ovary removed supposedly causing the pain when the "older" more experienced Dr which my other sister was working for reviewed the sisters chart. It was so amazing when he told her what he thought the problem was. A "Spastic Colon" ?? that just didn't sound right. So anyway she thought what the heck and took the medication which he prescribed. Guess what? It worked. She has not had any more pain as long as she takes the medicine for her spastic colon. The name of the medicine was Bentyl. It just relaxes the intestines.

Since then which was many years ago we have seen this happen so many times. Most of my family has problems with a spastic colon so her experience has helped so many people that have tried it. Just a suggestion, I by no means am a Medical Dr. but Lord knows I don't want anyone to go through unnecessary surgery or pain. A lot of Dr's really don't realize this because the pain the patient describes leads toward female problems so here they go in search of. I myself am on the medication and thank God I didn't have to experience all the surgery my sister did. I hope your friend will at least consider this option. If she would try anything to relax the colon before having another surgery. Also there is a herb that she could try if she can't get some Bentyl. What would she have to lose? Again I'm not being nosey just hoping to help.

    ASTROLOGY GUEST COLUMM

    A Soul's Journey

The interest in the journey of the soul is one that I had questioned quite some time ago when I couldn't grasp the realization of death.

My first step to realizing this was through astrology. I took private classes in tarot then began astrology from the absolute beginning. When I began spiritual and medical astrology the journey of the physical body seemed so limited but the journey of the soul was much more defined and much more complex. Since the astrology chart itself represents the blueprint of our being, what can be utilized is the spirit through the chart and its journey towards enlightenment or to some, rapture.

The soul is energy, that which manifests and never actually is born or dies, which supports many theories for me. The soul puts 'spirit' into the shell or vessel (physical body) and uses the structure there to experience and fulfill what is to be during that life.

From the birth to death of this body is only one cycle of the soul's journey. Meaning, when the physical self dies, it is then a shedding of the skin (so to speak) and the metamorphosis continues as the soul continues on to the next plane of consciousness. I feel that we never sever our soul's past journeys completely, leaving our dreams ability to guide us or give us needed wisdom to survive this life. I believe that those who we feel are "with us" are in fact images of the soul's past connecting to us. Our inner voice, déjà vu, intuition; that is all accumulated from the soul and as a result, prepares us with the tools needed in life.

One might argue that we are born with nothing and need to learn on our own. Another may argue that we are born with a plan and follow it. Some even feel that we are born and die as in evolution and there is nothing that follows death. Everyone has their own understanding for what the soul is capable of enduring. One point that I find fascinating is the lack of free thought and abundance of merging with the righteous, traditional theories. That is when I quote, "Dare to think for yourself".

It seems that tradition and non-tradition have more in common than what is consciously noticeable. Some traditional (christian) beliefs may believe in angels and the afterlife, and even heaven (or hell). Non-traditional (free-thought, holistic, occult) beliefs may include past life regression, astral travel, spirit guides and free will of the soul. One may be so inclined to argue that we can't have past lives or reincarnation BUT we can go to heaven and reside with loved ones who then become angels who protect us. That in itself is contradictory but alas, when fixed beliefs are instilled in those who consciously choose to believe, we have an assumed battle of right against wrong.

Point being, there are many beliefs of the soul's direction after life, but in reality there is ONE. To endure the next manifestation of wisdom and apply it to the next incarnation. That direction is intimate with the higher self. What of the aura? Is that the color of the soul or the energy that we radiate? Personally, I feel it is a collective energy which the soul builds during each incarnation. It then radiates our wisdom and ability to represent our individual pattern. Perhaps the aura is the "fingerprint" of the soul. There are no two alike as there are no two physical people alike. Similarities reside but not exactitude.

In conclusion, our predominant, conscious journey is to live life to its fullest. Some of us are granted fame and fortune and some of us are denied the bare necessities. We all have the conscious ability to control the direction of the soul.

Unfortunately not all of us are attuned to the inner voice and in the end, suffer from denying free-thought and an open mind. Repression of free will condemns the soul to the lower level of consciousness and therefore is unable to expand and collect wisdom for life's journey. It can also deny us the use of our inner tools which enable survival.

The soul is very wise and should be taken into consideration its strength and collective higher (super) conscious. For without respect for your soul, you exist as one who will spend life in entirety searching for personal fulfillment. The search for fulfillment in the outer world should always begin with the inner world as represented by the womb that brings us new life and allows us to bear life itself.

In closing, I choose the wisdom of Ishtar. "The world is filled with those that preach of a new life, that tell of love and the ways of passion, but how can the blind lead the blind? Love is not a stranger, it is a friend. Passion is but a presence of being now. Ecstasy is not a drug, it is a gift. Desire is not to be quenched, but fueled. Love is not to be sought, but freely given. May you now see the light."
