I was reading an article in "All Over The Earth Astrologically" by Ivy M. Goldstein-Jacobson and thought it would be interesting for you to read what she has to say about "Looking Backward To See Ahead" and I will quote this part of her writing below.

[QUOTE] Besides looking forward in the natal ephemeris to see the progressed aspects that indicate events in the future, we also look backward in the natal ephemeris to see the regressed or prenatal aspects to natal aspects that also indicate future events.

"You are born in the middle of a 6-month period beginning 90 days before your birth and continuing for 90 days after your birth (more than 90 days if you plan to live longer than 90 years). It makes no difference whether the aspect is formed by progression or regression; it operates that number of days called that number of years following birth.

"The ground work consists of listing the known events in the life together with their dates; then go backward as many days as the number of years so indicated and take the planetary positions aspecting the planets that account for that event.

"For example, we cite a woman's natal chart with Saturn 8°Libra in the 3rd of brothers and sisters - Mercury ruling the cusp. Two days before her birth (which means two years after her birth) regressed Mars in 8° Gemini and regressed Moon 8° Aquarius trined that Saturn, accounting for the birth of her sister two years younger than she. Usually, important events are shown by simultaneous progressed and regressed aspects; thus, two days (years) after the native's birth her progressed Mercury-ruler-3rd went Direct and paralleled that Saturn, confirming that birth. However, the progressed Moon 8°Aries opposed Saturn and the sisters were separated for over forty years.

"The student should always learn to read events in the future by aspects that produced established results n the past; that is how we get our rules. Thus, the trines to Saturn that we just enumerated gave the woman a sister but the opposition served to separate them, and Saturn-if-Time made it longer. Squares cause violence or loss as the case may be, and like conjunctions arouse planets into action

"Here we have the chart for a man who was born at 3:30 p.m. CST Jan. 15, 1920 at 87W19 38N46, chosen because the Moon rules the Ascendant and is square Uranus, denoting something occurring in his life that would be personal, physical and out of the ordinary and, being in Fixed Signs, something that he could not avoid. It would thereby be important and must be shown by both progression and regression. Being clearly apparent, it will be easier to read.

"Noting that the Moon also rules the 2nd House, denoting the future, the presence there of Neptune square the Part of Fortune in the 11th house (circumstances out of his control) is confirmation of a future unusual, unfortunate and unavoidable event.

"For important developments we look to see when the progressed Sun will set off a natal position. If he aspects the Ascendant or its ruler, the event affects the person whose chart it is, personally and sometimes physically; especially if it is a square as he promises in this chart when he moves forward in 30 days (years) to reach 25°Aquarius and square the Moon who rules the Ascendant and the Future-2nd both endangered by the square to malefic Uranus.

"30 days after birth on January 15, 1920 takes us forward to the progressed date February 14th; and 30 days before birth takes us backward to the regressed date December 16, 1919. Besides the progressed Sun which initiated the activity by square to the Moon, and the progressed Moon 29°Sagittarius sextile Uranus (no aspect that "agrees" with whatever is going on) the regressed Sun 23° sextiled Mars, "agreeing" to activate their square at birth, while regressed Mars 8°Libra was exactly square the Ascendant. It would be a time of great physical danger because the regressed Moon was in 23°Libra, exactly conjunct the planet of violence.

"This man was an officer n our Armed Forces in Korea during the war and at 7:30 a.m. KT 7/10/1950 he was shot from ambush. The bullet lodged forever in his spine, being impossible to remove safely, and paralyzed him from the waist down, condemning him to a wheelchair for life. Neptune rules paralysis and is in Leo, the sign ruling the spine, and also in the Future-2nd House and afflicted; a bad omen. However, the conjunction to benefic Jupiter in the 2nd brought generous financial compensation, and the trine to benefic Venus in the 6th provides medical care and a heartwarming number of fringe benefits.

"It is noteworthy that the 8th degree of Cancer has to do with hospital administration, and this man enlisted for the Medical Dept., where he progressed rapidly from Private to 1st Lt. Medical Administrative Corps. Note the Ascendant ruler in the medical sign Scorpio, and Pisces-of-Hospitals on the desired-vocation-10th House with the co-rulers Neptune and Jupiter trine Venus in the nursing-6th House.

"He was married on January 22, 1942, at age 22, the progressed date being February 6th and the regressed date December 24, 1919. It was shown more by his regressed ruler Moon than by the progressed Moon which is 18°Virgo conjunct the 4th signified a change of domicile, while the regressed Moon was 24°Capricorn, exactly conjunct both the progressed 7th cusp and the natal Sun in the matrimonial 7th.

"Two months after his marriage his brother died as regressed Saturn 11°41 Virgo changed direction in the brother-3rd conjunct the Part of Death, and the progressed death-8th cusp 15°Aquarius (conjunct the progressed Sun ruler-3rd) was opposition Jupiter-ruler 10th, which is the death-8th for the brother-3rd-house. These did not aspect the natal Ascendant or its ruler, thus they did not mean the native's death; they showed a death in his circle.

"His Moon at birth is square Uranus, the planet of spasmodic and sudden affliction; she is also in aspect with Mars, denoting an operation. Being in Scorpio, the most likely operation would be for an acute attack of appendicitis because Scorpio rules the appendix, and that is what happened in 1939 at age 19. The progressed date was February 3rd, and the regressed date December 27, 1919. That it was an emergency was shown by the regresse Moon in 29°Aquarius conjunct the emergency planet Uranus. It was the first time an emergency was shown by the regressed Moon in 29°Aquarius conjunct the emergency planet Uranus. It was the first time the progressed Moon conjoined a malefic in the physical 1st Quadrant, as in 10° Leo she set off Neptune's square to Fortuna while progressed Mars 0°Scorpio confirmed the fact that it was an emergency by his exact conjunction to the Soltice Point of Uranus. Wherever you find this unpredictable planet by house you find the department where emergencies must be met, where unavoidable developments must be accepted and, if you are versed in astrology, where you must prepare in advance for disaster to be timed by progressions and regressions, as well as by major malefic transits. Uranus in the 9th of distant places in this chart accounts for the major disaster that befell this man far from home in Korea, as explained earlier.

"In 1957, age 37, he went to Mexico for a long stay. The progressed date was February 21st; both the progressed Moon and progressed travel-9th were together in 25°Pisces trine the natal Moon his own ruler. The regressed date was December 9, 1919, and the regressed Moon 11°Cancer was sextile Saturn in the travel-3rd and opposition Mercury in the removal 7th. Being confirmed by both progressions and regressions it was an important development in life.

"Once again, however, the regressions outweighed the progressions by force of numbers, since there were two additional confirmations present. The Sun, ruling the travel-3rd, regressed to 15°Sagittarius trine the travel planet Jupiter while Venus cut short her position in the 6th-of-tenancy by regressing to 0°Scorpio, the abrupt Solstice Point of Uranus who departs without ceremony in the 9th. His unceremonious departure, leaving no forwarding address, and traveling in a wheel chair, revealing only that he was going to Mexico, coincided with a very heroic (Uranian) decision to free his wife. The ruler of the 1st square Uranus brings divorce."[UNQUOTE]

Now, for all of you reading this article, this should really answer your questions as to why some Astrologers charge so much for all of the charts they have to run to give you a reading or reasoning for something that happened in your life. This lady is so thorough with her Astrology, it is no wonder she is so well known and has published so many books. If you find any, they would be a treasure to own. She is deceased and writes no more on this earth plane.
