Personal Profile

Hi, I am Vaneeta Kaur Grover. I am a Virgo and hold very strong characteristics of Virgo as well as of number 9.

I grew up in a small town, Pilani, almost 210 km west of Delhi in Rajasthan. I went to Birla Balika Vidya Peeth for my schooling. Pilani is known for its Birla schools and in particular for its engineering college - Birla Institute of Technology and Science.

Mathematics was one subject that had fascinated me since my childhood. As a result, my marks (grades) were always quite high in Mathematics. A few times my parents found me mumbling some calculations in my dreams too. This affinity for mathematics took me to Delhi for my college where I did B.A. (Honors) in Mathematics from Jesus and Mary college, Chanakyapuri.

During the final year of my B.A. (H), I found Linear Programming more intersting than any other subject. That drove me to do my Masters in Applied Operational Research from South Campus, University of Delhi, New Delhi. Since hard work and determination always pays, I received Gold medal for being first in the University among the female candidates for the year 1996. (To see my Gold Medal, click: My Gold Medal).

I am not quite sure how and what happened next, all I can recall is myself sitting on plane on my way to Canada to do Masters in Statistics from McMaster University, Hamilton. Yeah, I was excited about coming to Canada but was scared and nervous too for I didn't know anybody here and I was going to live alone. Living alone is something one doesn't get to experience in India. There are always close or not so close relatives and friends (or their relatives) at most of the place in India where one could stay. But, I was lucky enough to get two very helpful professors in the Department - Dr. G.Mohanty, his wife Mrs. Mohanty and Dr. N.Balakrishnan. Without their help and support, I could not have survived those initial days in Hamilton.

Desire to learn more and specialise in Management Sciences, I joined the Doctorate program in Management Science at Michael De Groote School of Business, McMaster University.

For last year and a half, I have been involved with Hamilton-McMaster Rotaract Club. Immediately after joining the club, I became Vice-President of the club. . In July 2001 I became the President. The club flourished under my leadership and was active in different activities: seminars as part of professional development activities, local as well as International community projects. In middle of November 2001, we organized the first fundraiser of our club: "Multi Cultural Entertainment Evening" which was a big success. The money thus raised was used for: sending wheel chairs, communication devices and books to "Foundation for Disabled Kids" in Thailand for International Service Project; donating, supplies for women and children, to Martha House, a women shelter for abused women. Money was also sent to Baal Seva Ashram (Anathalaya - Orphanage), Bhiwani, Haryana, India for the education and upbringing of children. In addition to these activities, we also maintained a close contact with the sponsoring Rotary Clubs and the members of the Rotaract Club volunteer on regular basis in the events and/or activities of the sponsoring Rotary clubs.

Crowning of my Presidency was the International Conference on Youth Leadership & Sustainable Development (http://ca.oocities.com/confylsd_2002) held at McMaster University from May 15th to 17th May 2002. An International youth group from Argentina, Philippines, Australia, Namibia, Netherlands, Jordan, India and Canada of course (from as far as BC) joined to put their heads together to mull over the problems and solutions of future generations dealing with leadership and sustainable development.

I enjoy watching movies Hindi (Bollywood) as well as English and going to theaters. I have been to some of the famous theaters - "Phantom of the Opera", "Show Boat", both musicals and both in Toronto. Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake as well as at Stratford Festival (Shakespeare). I have also been to a few shows at the Theater Acquarius in Hamilton. Professional Profile

I have a basic honors degree in Mathematics (minor in Economics), I have a Masters in Applied Operations Research (AOR) and Statistics (with thesis).

While doing Masters in AOR, I did a project on "The Development of Indian Telecom Sector: The Gap Between Demand And Supply; And It's Financial Implications". For the thesis I developed an econometric model to forecast the demand and supply till the year 2000. After having predicted the demand of telephones, I analyzed different funding options to acquire the capital required to fulfill the demand of telephone services by the year 2000 using linear programming. Software used: RATS (Regression and Time Series) and TORA (Operations research package). This project was done in conjunction with the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, and they liked the results so much that they were considering using the model internally.

The thesis for Masters degree in Statistics was with: "Analysis of two server polling system with overlapping skills and 1-limited service".The main aim of the thesis was to find the optimal division of load in the three queues, i.e. the optimal degree of overlap of skills between the two servers with waiting time in queue as the performance measure. A method was recommended to approximate the mean waiting time in a queue that can be used to determine the optimal allocation of load to the three queues. Numerical Analysis techniques were used to solve complicated set of equation. Software used: FORTRAN and SLAM II. This thesis demonstrate my ability to solve complex problems of practical nature.

My academic training and the projects required for the degree, have prepared me well in analytical as well as problem solving skills. It has also taught me to prioritize, tackle several tasks (courses) simultaneously and work under tight deadlines. I grew up in India and moved to Canada in 1996. This gave me a good opportunity to get exposed to different cultures. Also, being involved with different groups like CORS, SSC, Alumni Association and Hamilton-McMaster Rotaract Club gave me a good training and exposure to work with multicultural as well as cross functional teams.

Strong oral and written communication skills are reflected well by different publications as well as different leadership positions held by me. I was also the Master of Ceremonies for the mini paper night I organized under aegis of Canadian Operations Research Society, Toronto Chapter on "What Experts have to say about Quality"; at the fundraiser: "Multicultural Entertainment Evening" for the Rotaract Club as well as at the Conference on "Youth Leadership & Sustainable Development". It required good oral communication skills as well as to be able to think and make decisions on my toes. I am also well versed in teamwork, which is the hallmark of organizing such successful events.
