There are many reasons to take an art class. For some, they want to learn how to draw and/or paint. For others, they want to learn more to build on skills they already have. And for others, the practice of making art is very theraputic. All of these reasons are good ones. There are as many reasons to be doing art as there are aspiring artists.
I want to accomodate those who want to gather to work on art, but do not have the time or resources to devote to more expensive endeavors.
Regardless of the number of classes we have during the week, the same lesson will be presented at all of them. This enables people the opportunity to catch other classes if they can't make their regularly scheduled one, or the opportunity to practice a bit more on a single lesson if they need it.
Everyone will be expected to purchase and bring their own supplies. I'll have backup supplies, but not enough for an entire class. A list of basic materials will be provided.
Most of our work will probably be done with pencil. There are many reasons for this. Primarily, it is the most accessible tool to work with. Secondarily, it is one of my preferred mediums (with wash--black watercolor--being another).
I intend to work with both still life and figure drawing. Since figure drawing is considerably more complicated, we will want to make sure that basics are covered first. That means a lot of time with still life to learn the principles and techniques that go into portraying the human figure.
The skill level will probably vary, so I'll try to tailor the lessons around those who attend. This is a perfect environment for beginners! But I will challenge the more experienced to grow as well.
Classes will be held weekly. However, the schedule and pricing depends on where the classes take place.
LaSalle-Peru:
Right now the schedule is set for Wednesday evening and Saturday morning. I recognize that life can be messy, so I'm pretty flexible with this. As long as we can get at least five people to commit to being at a given place and time, I'm willing to schedule a class around that. The price is currently set at $10/week, which is paid on the first lesson attended that week. Regular attendance will be expected. (At the moment, I'm considering going to monthly fees, but I want to see how this system works first.)
Rockford:
Because I will have to drive over an hour to get here, the schedule will have to be tighter and fees higher. I would like to have classes on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm, but I am open to other suggestions. The cost will be $15/week, and we will still need at least 5 students to start. And, yes, regular attendance is still expected.
Princeton:
The classes will be on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm. The cost will be $13/week, and we will still need at least 5 students to start.
There is yet one more expectation for those who attend: have some fun! The creative process is truly an enjoyable one. This is not about competition. This is about unleashing the creative potential that resides deep within us and maybe even harnessing that power a bit to serve us in everyday life. Learning how to embrace our own creativity in this way should be a joyful experience.
