F1 Visa Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training is temporary employment authorization that gives F-1 visa holders an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a realistic work experience off campus. It is valid for a period of 12 months. Authorization for Optional Practical Training is granted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).

Requirements for F1 visa Optional Practical Training ( OPT )

• be maintaining valid F-1 status at the time of the application, and
• intend to work in a position directly related to your major field of study.
• have been a full time student in F1 status for at least one full academic year prior to the submission of your application

Documents for Optional Practical Training

• Recommendation letter signed by your dean, department chair person or academic advisor.
• Completed Form I-765
• A copy of your I-94 form (both sides), a copy of the F1 visa and a copy of your passport
• Copies of all previous I-20s
• Two recent photographs (Write your name and SEVIS number in pencil on the back of the photos)
• A check for $180 payable to US Department of Homeland Security

Traveling in OPT status

The following documents are needed to enter into US during OPT status

• Valid passport and valid F1 visa
• Valid I-20 form endorsed by an International Officer within the preceding six months
• Valid EAD and letter from employer showing temporary employment.

Optional Practical Training FAQ

	How will I know the USCIS has received my application?
	your check has been cashed by USCIS you will receive a notice (Form I-797) from USCIS, stating you need to wait for about 80-90 days to receive your EAD with the case number (EAC number)
	How long does it take to get approval for Optional Practical Training from USCIS?
	An approval might take anywhere from 90 to 120 days.
	How will I know if my Optional Practical Training application has been approved?
	You will receive a small photo identification card, called an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from the USCIS.
	What is H1b OPT gap?
	The period between end date of OPT and H1b Filing date is called H1b OPT gap.
	What are the guidelines for the dates related to H1b OPT gap?
	If you have a gap between end date of OPT and H1b start date you are okay, however if you have a gap between end date of OPT and h1b filing date, you will be out of status.
	If my lawyer files my H1-B application before my F1 student status expires, but I don't hear from the INS by the time my student status expires, am I out of status while I wait for the answer? Is there a problem, if there is a gap between opt and h1b?
	No, As long as your application was filed while your F1 student visa was still in effect, you may legally remain in the United States until your H1-B application is either approved or denied. However, if you didn't have work permission with your on F1, you cannot work unless and until you get your H1 petition approved.
	Do I need to have a job to apply for Practical Training?
	No.
	What are the guidelines for the dates I choose on the Optional Practical Training request form?
	The OPT card is approved for specific beginning and end dates. The start date can be no later than 60 days after the completion of studies.
	Can I change jobs when I am in Optional Practical Training ?
	You may change employers, however, you need to get authorization from INS
	Can I take more than one job, when I am on OPT?
	You can take as many jobs as you want.
