encouraged to spend time getting to know her. We have several new members that

have become members in our club this past year. We must spend our time

welcoming these new members. Make them feel at home. Help them become an

active part of our Club. I trust all new members will have a fun time during this

transition period of time of transition into full-fledged "serving" Rotarians.

VERA DAVIS MCCLENDON YOUTH AND FAMILY CENTER

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

It was success. The Rotary Club raised over $1100 for the Center and had a

company volunteer to steam clean the sidewalks. Over 10 Rotarians had a great

time working and serving the pancake eaters. Many prizes were raffled off to the

youth attending. Gisele brought her twirlers and her dancers as well as her popcorn

machine.

Rotarians participating and present included Project Leader Duncan Elkinson,

Jeffrey Solomon, Christopher McDowell, Giselle Robeiro, Willie Hjorth, Kaz

Smith, Steve Williamson, David Escobar, Elizabeth Rodriguez-Goldstein, David

Maxwell and Rotarian in waiting Irene Bashoff and her husband Ken and potential

son-in-law. And special thanks to COSTCO and to Humberto Yniguez for

donating the food ingredients, to Jan Davis and the Venice High School for

donating the use of their cooking grill, to Alex Rosales, Control Printing, for

printing the tickets, to Elizabeth for providing the youth raffle prizes and the use of

her truck and to Steve for the use of his truck.

The local firemen showed up in mass after we turned off the grill. Not to be

outdone and to insure they were fed, the Club gave them a ten-pound bag of

pancake mix, three pounds of bacon, a tub of butter, bottles of syrup and orange

juice. Of course, they had to cook their breakfast back at the station. We

appreciated them coming and look forward to raising money for them next Spring

at their station..4

Pictures of the event were shown at the October 2 meeting. They will also be

available at the October 9 meeting.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP and special thanks to all our

Rotarians for selling tickets and donating tickets to the Venice Youth.

We had Rotarian visitors from Anchorage, Alaska, Truckee, CA and Auburn, CA

attending our fun filled meeting. We are now down to 18 cards with just one joker

left for all the money. Be there next week. Jim Bovee drew this week and to the

delight of the Club was NOT a winner! Odds are getting better for each of us.

Bring plenty of cash with you to the next meeting. Dr. Vince, the Club Foundation

Chair, talked about the November 1 Foundation Dinner and the opportunity to sell

raffle tickets. We also need to donate 5 Silent Auction items for that evening. See

Vince about donations.

Thanks to all the Club members who were present and to those who are making up

missed meetings. We had a fund meeting. Carmen led the club in an invocation.

Dr. Vince led the pledge and Tony Medley led the Club in singing "This Land is

Your Land". Elizabeth provided the raffle prizes and Carmen showed us the way

in welcoming our visitors with a resounding "Hello".

Steve Williamson and Howard Pollack had a winning ticket at the Culver City

Rotary Club money raffle held on September 28 whereby they divided $5250.

Admiral Willie also won $200. Steve bragged a Polio Corrective Surgery and

Howard bragged money in his granddaughter’s name toward a Paul Harris Fellow.

Jim Bovee was fined $1 and Joey "Perfect Attendance" won the No Fine Badge for

$25.

Our speaker was Elena M. Garate, Santa Monica Community College Dean of

International Education, who provided useful data and information about the

importance of international students to the economy of California.

President Maxwell thanked all Club Rotarians for their support and participation.6

during the first three- (3) months of his Presidency. It has been his pleasure and

honor to represent and lead the Venice Marina Rotary Club. Thanks to each of you

for doing that which you can to support our Rotary Club.

ANOTHER VENICE MARINA ROTARY CLUB SPONSORED

TELEVISION PROGRAM

Rotarian Duncan Elkinson interviewed the People’s Republic of China Team

Leader Weiping Zhang for a public television thirty-minute program to be shown

later. Thanks Duncan. This is the third television program our Rotary Club has

sponsored on events in our community in the last three months. I’d suggest that the

Holiday Fair would make a great show, Duncan.

Yours in Rotary,

David Maxwell, Club President

Under The Tuscan Sun (4/10)

Copyright © 2003 by Tony Medley

Rome Adventure (1962) was a movie starring Suzanne Pleshette and Troy Donohue about

an American tourist (Pleshette) who resigns her job and goes to Italy and gets involved.9

with an American architect (Donohue). It was a pretty silly movie, but it was a great

travelogue and I actually enjoyed it.

Segue to 2003 and Under The Tuscan Sun, which is the 21 st Century’s answer to Rome

Adventure. Although it’s the translation of a book by Frances Mayes into film, it was

written, produced, and directed by Audrey Wells, who obviously has a political point,

which is what sets it apart from Rome Adventure. From what I know about Mayes’s book,

to say it’s "loosely based" on the book is to say a mouthful. But it’s got a lot in common

with Rome Adventure in that it’s pretty silly and it’s a great travelogue. I want it on the

record right here that I’d watch Diane Lane in anything, even if she’s just sitting there

looking at the camera. The woman is drop dead gorgeous. The fact that she can act is a

bonus.

As in Rome Adventure, the shots of Italy in Under The Tuscan Sun are beautiful and

worth the price of admission, thanks to cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson. But the

story, well, it’s weaker than the story in Rome Adventure. Frances, (Lane), a writer

recovering from a bad divorce, takes a gay tour of Europe, sees a broken down villa, buys

it on a whim and sets out to renovate it. Unfortunately, the story is vintage Hollywood.

To understand what would really happen if someone bought a broken down building in a

foreign country, one must read Herman Wouk’s Don’t Stop The Carnival. That’s realistic

(I have not read Mayes’s book; maybe it’s realistic, too). This is Hollywood, so Frances’s

experiences are unrealistic, but highly romantic. With very little effort the broken down

villa is converted into something resembling Fontainebleau. Viewed in their best light,

the characters are paper mâche.

What sets Tuscan apart is that it’s full of points of view which can charitably be

described as in-your-face feminism that are certain to offend lots of people like, for

instance, me. And it’s apparently what Audrey Wells wants to say because I don’t think

these story lines were in the book.

First is that throughout the movie men are minimalized or shown as bad people. Bad man

#1 is Frances’s husband, who we never see. He cheats on her, resulting in a divorce.

Worse, she was supporting him, so he gets her house and alimony, even though his

cheating caused the divorce. This is a direct departure from the book in which Frances is

a happily married woman when she buys the villa. Further, the original story line of the

film had Frances as an attorney who quit her job to avoid the pressure and took a trip to

Europe with no mention of a divorce. But if there’s no husband and no divorce, there’s

no bad man. Ergo, husband plus divorce equals bad man. Bad Man #2 is a writer who

gets revenge on Frances for a bad review of his book by confronting her at a party and

telling her of her husband’s infidelity. Bad man #3 is Frances’s lawyer, a man played by a

guy who looks exactly like Jeffrey Tambor, best known as the egotistical, unlikable

sidekick, Hank Kingsley, on The Larry Sanders Show (1992-98). He is equally unlikable

here (do you think maybe that’s why he was cast, because he’s created an unlikable

persona?), and is unsympathetic and of no help to Frances. (Mysteriously, Tambor is not.10

listed as being in the movie, nor does the official Under the Tuscan Sun website mention

Tambor or any character playing Frances’s lawyer). Bad man #4: Frances has a love

affair in Italy and the guy turns out to be a two-timing creep.

Second, it attempts to normalize lesbian parenthood. Without any comment whatever,

Patti (Sandra Oh), Frances’s best friend, is in a lesbian relationship and is pregnant. How

she got that way is never explained. A man is apparently irrelevant. A father is apparently

unnecessary. For two women to have a baby with no father is presented as an acceptable

life style. The only thing that surprised me is that Wells didn’t have Patti have a partial

birth abortion to the huzzahs of the crowd after she’s jilted by her girl friend.

Third, there are two teenagers "in love," even though they’ve apparently only known

each other for a short period. The parents of the young woman have what I think is the

correct attitude; the guy, an itinerant foreign laborer with no education, is not a good

prospect for their beloved daughter so they are opposed to the marriage. But the parents

are shown as unreasonable, obstinate people. Frances intercedes, lies that the guy is a

part of her family, and, solely because of the opinion of this American stranger and his

performance in a flag-throwing contest, the parents cave in and allow the marriage. How

preposterous!

From my point of view all of these subservient lines are offensive and could have been

omitted without changing the basic plot. I’m sure that Gloria Steinem and Ellen

DeGeneres will enjoy this more than I did.

Under The Tuscan Sun would have been much more entertaining without the attitude and

with some intelligence and realism. As it is, it’s just a travelogue with some nice shots of

Diane Lane thrown in. It makes one yearn for a trifle like Rome Adventure.
