DISTRICT RI FOUNDATION EVENT NOVEMBER 1, 2003

Club Foundation Chairman Dr. Vince Scott distributed tickets to members for sale.

His letter to each member is printed hereafter. Please sell all that you can even if it

is only one ticket. This money goes to RI Foundation programs which provide

many services and opportunities to people worldwide on a need basis. It is another

opportunity to help Rotary make a difference in the lives of less fortunate people in

our world. We each can give up one of our daily Starbucks coffees and instead

spend that same money here. Please work with Dr. Vince in this worthwhile

opportunity. Our goal is 100% participation based on each of our abilities.

THANKS.

Ask Dr. Vince about our Club’s starting of this annual event in its present form.

I’m sure Dr. Vince will answer our questions and we will learn more about our

club’s past efforts. Remember we have been here for 62 years. Thank you for your

work, Dr. Vince.

NEXT DISTRICT BREAKFAST IS SEPTEMBER 30

Contact Club Secretaries or Club President if you’d like to go. Cost is $22. Counts

as a make up. Each person is encouraged to attend at least one District Breakfast a.5

year to meet other Rotarians and to see what occurs in the District. We have 45

plus clubs in District 5280 with almost 3000 members.

September 11 MEETING

Past District 5280 Governor (PDG) Carol Wylie spoke at this meeting about

Membership and opportunities for members in Rotary. Carol, a member of the

Dominguez-Carson Rotary Club, is District 5280’s Membership Chair; she also

serves as Rotary International’s Area Coordinator Western North America Poverty

Alleviation Task Force. She was a clear and articulate speaker. Rotary

International is in 163 countries with over One Million Members in some 31,000

plus clubs. We truly are part of the wheel of Rotary. A Rotarian can go virtually

anywhere in the world and attend a Rotary Meeting. Rotarians Howard Pollack and

JR Dzubak gave examples of how this works. Carol pointed out that people are

motivated by the question "What’s in it for Me?" Well, Rotary offers a wide and

never-ending range of activities and opportunities to meet everyone’s needs and

passions.

PDG Wylie also installed three new members: Peter Aprato, Emmanuel Murekeza

and David Escobar, each who were respectively sponsored by Howard Pollack,

David Maxwell and Jeffrey Solomon. Welcome to each of these fine men. I urge

and request each Venice Marina Rotarian to reach out their hands in welcome and

to do some act or make some comment each week to make these new members feel

a part of our Rotary Family. And you three new members should make your

passions known to your club officers as to which Rotary activities interest you.

Attending the weekly meetings is just the start of your fun.

Attending this meeting were some 22 active Venice Marina Club members, speaker

Wylie, two visiting Rotarians (Bill Roscoe and Hiroko) and seven (7) special guests

– Ken and Irene Bashoff, Marty Bogoratt (former Woodland Hills Rotarian), Ginger

Caples-Urode, Alex Rosales, Michael Freeman and Martin Smith. Welcome to

each and every one of these visitors. Carmen led the welcome song.

Brags included David Voss announcing he became a member of our club 10 years

ago this month. He threatened others also if they did not step forward with their

brag about their Rotary birthdays. David also announced his boat, the PARANHA.6

won the 2003 Schock 35 National Championship. Way to race David! Howard

Pollack bragged on opening his new business "GROW YOUR BUSINESS".

Carmen bragged about her trip to Washington DC this past weekend. Thanks to all

our braggers for their contributions to the Club Treasury.

The meeting was opened by President Maxwell and was followed by Club

Treasurer leading the Club in a minute of silent reflection. Elizabeth led the pledge

and the dynamic singing duet of Joey and Christopher led the club in "God Bless

America". Everyone was mindful of the meaning of 9-11.

Announcements included Dr. Vince presenting Joey (Perfect Attendance) with a

sapphire pin for his contributions to Rotary International Foundation. He then gave

each member present his letter and 11 tickets for the District Foundation Raffle.

Carmen stated that the delivery of good to the downtown woman’s shelter would

occur on September 20. Thanks Carmen.

Duncan Elkinson talked about the September 27 pancake Breakfast for the Venice

Community Center. Please sign up to work and sell as many $3 tickets as you can.

All the proceeds go to the Vera Davis Community Center (former Venice library).

One group of men bought $300 of tickets, which will be distributed to children in

the Venice community.

JR talked about the act of violence that occurred near the Boy’s and Girl’s Club last

Friday evening. It was a true tragedy. However, there would be many more such

tragedies but for the efforts of JR and the workers at the Boys and Girls Club. Let’s

all support the Club and its workers. Thanks to Mary Richert’s immediate response

and the Venice Family Clinic, which provided grief counselors when requested by

JR.

New member David Escobar provided raffle prizes. Rotarian Filomena drew for

the money – no cigar for her. So we still have 2 jokers to find. We have had 8

drawings with just one winner. Interesting times ahead!!

Our waiter George was overwhelmed by our attendance today. For the first time we

did not receive our meal as quickly as we have been. Sorry members, but George.1

worked as hard as he could. This is the type of problem I like to have. Thanks for

being understanding.

The meeting was then adjourned. Many members stayed for fellowship and

networking until after 2PM.

WESTCHESTER LAX MDR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

September meetings include a mixer on September 25,Airprost relations meeting on

9-23 at 7:30AM and Membership/Networking on 9/19 at 7:30AM. Contact me if

you want more information. Rotarian David Voss is this Chamber’s President.

VENICE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Its monthly mixer will be at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club on September 24, at 5:30PM,

where a tour of the new Charter School will take place. Rotarian Mary Richert is

this Chamber’s President and Rotarian Jeffrey Solomon is its Treasurer.

VENICE HIGH SCHOOL and VENICE MARINA ROTARY COMMUNITY

LUCHEON will occur this November. Venice High Students will receive their

"Recognition of Excellence" Jackets. Since 1984, over 350 Venice Students have

been awarded jackets of academic excellence for their academic and attendance

achievements. Teachers and community leaders are also recognized.

Yours in Rotary,

DAVID B. MAXWELL, Club President

Dear Venice-Marina Rotarian,

Once a year, Rotary District 5280 of which we are a member sponsors a "Foundation Celebration" to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. The event revolves around a dinner and dancing, as well as a silent auction and raffle drawng..2

As previously announced, this year's event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the City of Commerce on Saturday, November 1. The cost of the dinner is $75 per person and it is always a stellar event. If you would like to attend, let President Dave or myself know as soon as possible.

How else can you help if you cannot attend the dinner?

First of all, you will find enclosed a book of tickets valued at $100. There is also an extra, or eleventh (II th) ticket as a bonus for selling or purchasing the entire book. This year's Grand Prizes include a $5000 Nordstrom’s Shopping Spree, a 7 Day Mexican Riviera Cruise for Two, and a Week in Maui for Two, including Airfare and Hotel.

Even if you cannot sell or purchase the entire book, a partial contribution is greatly appreciated and goes a long way towards supporting the programs of Rotary International. As in the past, the amount of the tickets you sell can be applied on a DOLLAR TO DOLLAR basis towards a Paul Harris Fellowship OR Sustaining Membership of your choosing.

Through the years, as your Paul Harris Foundation chairperson, I have tried to emphasize the importance of our members becoming Paul Harris Fellows in Rotary International. For those newer members who may not be aware of the program, a Paul Harris Fellow is a designation granted for a total contribution of $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. It doesn't have to happen in one step, as people can make an initial contribution of $100 and build in increments from there as a Sustaining member. As you can see, the sale of the raffle tickets is an effective and painless way of getting started.

Another way to participate is to provide an item for the silent auction. Again, you can receive credit towards a Paul Harris Fellowship based upon how much the item sells for that evening. In this case, 50% is credited to the donor, and 50% is credited to the individual who purchases the item.

This year, I hope that all of our members can become involved in some way for this very important and worthwhile event. Please get your ticket stubs and checks back to me by no later than Thursday, OCTOBER 23rd. Also the same deadline holds true for any auction items you may wish to donate.

If there are any questions, please give a call,

Sincerely,

Vince Scott Venice-Marina Foundation Chairman (310) 823-5377

As Mary Richert reminded the attendees at the Venice Chamber of Commerce this morning, we

email to groups by emailing to ourselves, put the each group member’s name in the group list,

and "Bcc", not Cc that group listing to protect our data base from mistakes. None of us are

looking for spam, any unwanted email, even a possible fraud or theft of money or identity.

Jeffrey

As of this writing I have not received any thoughts or suggestions as to Club Membership

Requirements, Standards and Practices so I am assuming that you are all willing to unanimously

accept whatever I propose at the Club Assembly. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
