The Mesh

Letters to the Editor

Dear Willie,

My son Ashish forwarded to me the letter you addressed to him. I am gratified to receive such overwhelming praise for the little that I could do in addressing your club. I think it was the very atmosphere in your Rotary Club which compels the best in everyone to come out. From the moment we entered to the time we left, there was not a moment when we felt we were among strangers. There was warmth in the atmosphere and a sense of purposefulness.

I have been to umpteen Rotary Club meetings. Naturally all cannot have the same standards, but your’s was par excellence. More strength to your elbow.

Your words have given more strength to my resolution to spread the message of Good health without medicines as far and wide as I can and with all the resources at my command. Rotary has always been a big supporter and I owe it my undying gratitude.

Please convey my good wishes to all the members of your club.

With warm and sincere personal regards,.Your’s in Rotary,

Vijay

California Rotary License Plates

January 11, 2003

Dear Rotary Leader,

It is now or never if the Rotary License Plates program is going to become a reality. Our deadline

of December 31, 2002 has come and passed. Our RLP California Assembly bill, AB1129, has

now expired.

What does this mean?

In more than 50 recent email messages received from various District Governors and Rotary

leaders from around the state, everyone is saying "get an extension." Getting an extension is

easier said than done! The total number of Rotary License applications received to date is 2684.

It is presumptuous to expect the California legislators to grant an extension when we’ve only

received one third of the required 7500 applications for our Rotary License Plates to be made. We

were given 2 years to get 7500 applications, and we failed to do so.

However, we do have considerable momentum. We have received over 1500 applications in the

past six months. The majority of these applications have been received within the last 45 days.

Many Rotarians have invested a lot of time and energy in this project these past two years. No

one wants this investment to be wasted by officially ending the RLP project without success. If

we fail there will be no California Rotary License Plates made and issued..I’m proud of our Districts leadership. One hundred percent (100%) of our current District

Governors have submitted paid applications for their California Rotary License Plates. If those

Past District Governors, District Governor Elects, presidents, past presidents, and president elects

who have not yet submitted a paid application did so, we would be very close to a total of 5000

applications.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. Make no mistake. If Rotarians do not purchase a minimum of

2684 additional California Rotary License Plates in the next 60 days, this RLP project will be

officially over and we will not receive our Rotary license plates. By March 31, 2003 those

Rotarians who have submitted their applications will be given full refunds and the project will be

officially over.

Can we get 2500 additional applications submitted by March 15, 2003?

Yes we can! If every District Governor, Past District Governor, District Governor Elect, as well

as, every club president, past president and president elect makes this one of their highest

priorities over the next two months. The Rotary leadership must realize this is a worthy project

that deserves their immediate attention. The Rotary leadership must recognize the tremendous

value that the RLP program brings to the California Rotary organization. To have 7500 vehicles

traveling our roads on a daily basis displaying our Rotary emblem and our motto "Service Above

Self", brings visibility and public relations benefit to our organization.

The money raised from this RLP project goes directly to Rotary to support their community

service projects. With 7500 RLP applications submitted, this translates into approximately

$300,000 going directly to Rotary for these programs. Our communities need these Rotary

programs more than ever.

We can not fail! We must make the RLP program a success. This means that we need to get a

minimum 2684 applications in the next 60 days. Won’t you help? Do you have your RLP

application submitted? What are you willing to do to support our efforts? I would like to hear

personally from each and every one of you about your commitment to this end over the next 60

days. My email address is rlicenseplates@aol.com.

Once California Rotarians got this project approved by the California legislature and signed by

the governor, we began informing the entire California Rotary membership. Goals were

established for each Rotary club and each Rotary district. This goal was for each club and each

district to have 20% of their membership to submit a paid application. If this goal is met, our

RLP program is a reality. The Rotary License Plates will be made and sent to every Rotarian who

submitted an application to be placed on their vehicles. In subsequent years these RLP’s will be

renewed through the DMV..Once the plates have been authorized and made, all future applications will be processed

immediately and the license plates will be sent out within 6 to 8 weeks. As the Rotarian license

plates are renewed each year with the DMV, Rotary will continue to receive on an annual basis

this $300,000 (i.e., 10 years equals $3,000,000….that’s 3 million dollars).

With the RLP project in place, there is a strong possibility that each succeeding year the total

number of RLP’s will increase (15,000 Rotary License Plates equal $600,000 per year, 25,000

equals $1,000,000 per year). Can you imagine 25,000 vehicles driving our roads displaying our

California Rotary License Plates with our Rotary emblem and motto, "Service Above Self"?

Can you imagine one million dollars per year from the RLP project going to California Rotary

clubs to directly benefit our community projects?

We must be successful!

As shown below, these outstanding Rotary clubs have gone far beyond their goal of 20% of their

membership. I am extending a special thank you to each of them for realizing the worthiness of

this project and lending their support. These Rotarians see the value for the continuous visibility

and public relations that this project offers. They recognize the substantial amount of money that

is brought into Rotary to continue our community projects from the California Rotary license

plates project. These clubs are listed with the highest percentage listed first.

Even though many of the individual Rotary clubs have met or surpassed their goal of 20% of their

membership, none of our Rotary districts were able to meet their goal of 20% of their

membership. However there were four districts that put forth a strong effort towards reaching

their goal. These four districts and their performance are listed below

For those districts and clubs that did not reach their 20% goal, we hope these four successful

districts will provide inspiration and encouragement. Each club must motivate their membership

to reach or pass their club goal, if we are to be successful.

These past two years as I have traveled throughout California speaking to over 225 clubs about

the California Rotary License Plates project, I have made many new friends. I have met many

wonderful Rotarians and got to visit many California communities that I would not otherwise

have had the opportunity.

My immediate family at home is very important to me. My husband, daughter, and son have been

very understanding and supportive of my time and effort that I have devoted to this RLP project.

Not only have they been understanding of my absence, but they have patted me on my back and

fully supported my efforts. Even though December 31, 2002, has come and gone, my family

continues to support me in giving my all over the next 3 months to this RLP project. Beginning

in April, it’s my turn to show my family my appreciation and give them the time and attention

that they deserve. My love and thanks continually goes out to them.

IN CONCLUSION, we need each District Governor, Past District Governor, and District

Governor Elect to contact each and every club president in their district and to encourage them to

make this one of their highest priorities over the next 60 days. We need each president, past

president, and president elect to work within their club membership on a weekly basis to bring in

and surpass their club goal of 20% of their membership. Each club’s weekly meeting must

include a dedicated effort to collect completed paid applications for California Rotary License

Plates.

For us to have enough support to request an extension of time from the California legislature, we

must have 2684 additional paid applications submitted no later than March 15, 2003. This will

bring our total applications to 5000. With 5000 paid applications in hand, I will request a one

year extension of time (December 31, 2003) to complete the required 7500 paid applications. I

will also seek to have an exception of the 7500 minimum to 5000, so that we can have our Rotary.license plates project successful and our license plates made upon reaching the 5000..

When the California Senate Transportation Committee lifted the moratorium in the year 2000,

they increased the requirement from 5000 to 7500 prepaid applications. Only one special interest

license plate has been issued since the moratorium has been lifted. This was the 911 Memorial

plate. This plate was issued without a requirement of prepaid applications.

I am attempting to email this letter to each and every District Governor, Past District Governor,

District Governor Elect, club president, past president, and president elect. However, I don’t

want to limit the recipients to only this leadership group. I’m requesting that each District

Governor make sure that each one of your club presidents have received a copy of this letter and,

is mobilized in this effort to secure additional paid applications from their membership. I am

requesting that each president make a copy of this letter and along with an RLP application form,

distribute them to their entire club membership. Furthermore, I request each club president to

keep the RLP project on their agenda through March, 2003 and to do all they can to secure as

many paid applications as possible.

THE BALL IS IN YOUR COURT:

Are you going to allow the $100,000 collected so far that would go to Rotary club projects to be

refunded?

Are you going to allow the time and energy contributed by the Rotarians that supported this

project to go unfulfilled?

Are you going to tell me that you are spread too thin already to give any time in the next 60 days

to this project?

Are you going to tell me you’re just too busy?

I hope not!

NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ROTARY LICENSE PLATE PROJECT!!

Is your completed paid application already submitted? Do you know of another Rotarian who has

not submitted a paid application? Every time you attend a weekly Rotary meeting, you need to

put out the maximum effort to help us reach our goal..Visualize California Rotarians being successful in our Rotary License Plate project. The next

time you get behind the wheel of your automobile, take notice of how you notice the license

plates on the cars in front of you. Did you ever see the California Firefighters, Yosemite, Lake

Tahoe, California Arts, Sept 11 California Memorial, Whale Tail, Collegiate, Child Health &

Safety, US Olympic, or Veterans Affairs license plates?? I see some of these specialized plates

almost every day as I drive.

I look forward to the day when I spot my first Rotary License Plate on a car in front of me.

I will just smile, and feel very warm inside.

This letter is posted on our RLP website titled: "The next 60 days".

District Governors, please make sure this letter is posted on your district websites and printed in

your district newsletters as soon as possible. I will be checking your sites to make sure you have

done so.

Club presidents, please have this posted on your club websites and printed in your club newsletters as soon as possible.

I’m asking every person that receives this letter to give a copy to every Rotarian that they come

into contact with and discuss the importance of them completing a paid application in a timely

manner. You should inform these Rotarians that they can get a copy of the Rotary License Plate

application form from their RLP District Rep, their RLP Club Rep, or the Rotary License Plate

website (www.ca-rotarylicenseplates.org.

Rotary must succeed!

My love and thanks to all of you.

Yours in Rotary,

Maggie Wilhelm
