The city of Bellary

  

Vijayanagar Engineering College is situated in Bellary city of Northern Karnataka, 300 Kms. from Bangalore. It has a rich cultural , social and political heritage. The city is believed to have derived its name from the "Balla", which was used as the symbol of Lord Shiva in the Malleshwara Temple, the presiding deity of the city. The erstwhile capital of the 14th century Vijayanagar Kingdom, Hampi, is located just 60 Kms. from here. Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Hampi stands testimony to the glorious days of the kingdom.The fort built by Tipu Sultan on the Monolithic Rock, sites of pre-historic civilization at Sanganakal and the inscriptions of Emperor Ashoka are some other places of historical importance in the vicinity.
Bellary is the district head quarters with a population of 3 lakhs and Bellary district has 7 taluk centres. Hospet, Kotturu, Sandur are the major towns in the district. Bellary received international attention in 2000 when Sonia Gandhi and Sushma Swaraj battled for Bellary parliament constituency. 'Sonia package' of 3000 crore Rupees has been sanctioned for the development of Bellary.

Bellary is an important centre for agro-products, consumer and capital goods. It is a famous manufacturing centre of international quality denim garments. The rich manganese and iron ore reserves in the region have augmented the industrial development of the district. A score of well known business companies have established industries in the region. Bellary is slated to become "the Steel City of the South.

The city is well connected to other parts of the state and rest of the country by Road, Rail and Air.
