Editor's comment about the 1-1 tie for the USA in Guatemala on Sunday, July 16, 2000: The announcers, journalists, fans, and certain national officials and players are demonstrating their ignorance in bemoaning the 1-1 tie in the first game of World Cup 2002 qualification. Very  few voices of reason have been heard, namely Bruce Arena and Sunil Gulati. Suggested interviews for those of you who are reading this "fine print":  talk to people and read comments of those who have this before! Lothar Osiander, Bob Gansler, Bora Milutinovic, Steve Sampson,  and several players in the USA (Marcello Balboa, Paul Caligiuri, John Harkes, Tab Ramos, & Eric Wynalda) know the difficulties of "going to war" on the field on foreign soil. If a 1-1 away tie is the worst result we ever see, we will become a world power in soccer overnight! Look at the possibilities (ranking the worst outcome first): a loss at home, a loss at neutral, a tie at home, a tie at neutral, a tie away, a loss away. Additionally, look at the scores in qualification in past years:

Editor's comment about the 1-2 loss for the USA in Costa Rica on Sunday, July 23, 2000: As announced in last week's comment section, there are worse things than a tie on the road! But this loss is LESS negative than a tie at home or a loss at home! Relax everybody! Having said that, the reason points are being given away at the end of games is the lack of international experience on this team. This begs the question: Exactly what, other than youth, does the present roster offer over players like Balboa, Wynalda, and Harkes? If we were to lean toward more experience we could be fielding 403 more caps, 60 more goals, and 45 more assists (that's 165 more points)! Since Balboa and Harkes are playing well in MLS, and Wynalda is healthy and returning to the field, what the hell do we have to lose? The answer is:  QUALIFICATION! Attempting to give younger players more experience is exactly the same trap into which was fallen into by the former coach! These "older" players may not be in form for the World Cup Finals in 2002, however they CAN get us there! Suggested line-up for remaining qualification rounds:
G Keller
D Fraser
D Balboa
D Pope
M Ramos
M Reyna
M JM Moore
M Jones
M Stewart
F Razov
F McBride
