Damshui
This is a port town northwest of Taipei, where the main river that runs through the city meets the sea.
Damshui literally means "calm water", and it was once a quiet, tranquil shipping town. It has since been converted into a major tourist destination, with lots of pedestrian and cycling paths. Many people associate the town with the snack and vendor foods that are a local speciality- especially "Iron eggs", which are hard-boiled in soy until very firm and go really well with beer.

(In the distance, you can see a large statue- it depicts the same monkey god seen here)
We rented possibly the worst tandem bicycle in the entire world, and rode the paths that lead around and through the mangrove estuaries.
There is a new archeology museum, which is an amazing structure and has beautiful grounds, but the exhibitions are less than thrilling.
When the tide recedes on these flats, lots of people run out to collect the small crabs and clams that pop out of the black silt. It was much too stinky to interest us!
From this ferry boat, you are lookng towards the Damshui Fisherman's wharf, a popular tourist boardwalk. The suspension bridge is known as "Lover's Bridge", and it's where we became engaged.
