National Center for Traditional Arts in Ilan
The very new place was a real treat- it's beautiful, clean, welcoming, and well-conceived. The architecture is a mixture of traditional and modern, and it really invites you to spend the day and enjoy the hands-on exhibitions. You don't often see such careful and tasteful planning in Taiwan.
The site is located right on the river,
so you can take a boat tour.
There are hands-on workshops in pottery, shoe-making, and leather-punching,
as well as artist demonstrations

I figured my dad would appreciate the lathe work- these popular charms and are made by "glue-ing up" six cylinders of light wood, which are packed together with darker sawdust to fill in the spaces.
But my favorite part by far was the puppet display. At almost any time of day, you can turn on the television and find martial arts puppet dramas. There is also a huge section of these movies at the video stores.
The level of detail on them is really amazing- the mouths even move. It seems to me that the movies are very much organized around death scenes, when the puppeteers really get to emote.
This guy posing with Jenny is a famous monkey god, so he gets his own display.
Ilan is also a center for traditional Chinese opera. We ran into this actor at a supermarket, buying potato chips between shows!
