Green Island is mostly a volcanic rock pile. While there are very few sand beaches, the contrast between dark rock and blue water makes for incredible scenery. The rock also supports vibrant coral reefs, including one of the most diverse collections of soft corals in the world.
The picture above was taken from this view point, at the end of a pathway literally called the "Little Great Wall".
Today, the beauty of the island makes it a tourist destination, but it
has a much darker history- during the decades of martial law, it was the
home of Taiwan's largest jail for political prisoners. The site is now a historical park, with a seaside memorial to the protection of human rights. Many of its former prisoners are political leaders of the country today. |

The one road that circles the island is only 11 miles long, making it very easy to travel everywhere by scooter.
My brave parents survived the ride as passengers!
One of the best attractions in Taiwan is Green Island's famous seaside hot spring.
It is one of only three salt water hot springs in the world. Pools of different temperatures and pressures allow you to enjoy the waters many ways.....
..... including a rain shower, which was bent inward by the on-shore breeze.
