Chinese New Year Celebrations
We spent most of the holiday at Jenny's parents- visiting family, playing games, and eating!
To my surprise, it was a fairly quiet, simple celebration. We lit more fireworks than I ever have before, but there weren't any big parades, as I had hoped- that only occurs in the larger cities.
New year's eve dinner:
Jenny's dad and mom are next to me; her brother- Lenny- is the one closest on the right, then his wife, and her mom's "God son".
Despite the suggestion of some of my wise friends, that is not drug-paraphenalia on the table- it's a charcoal cooker.
Her mom is a really good cook (now you know where Jenny's skill comes from), and she always fills the table with dishes like this.
The first day of the new year is often devoted to games. Jenny's mother and brother are in the foreground, playing mahjong against her father's brother and a cousin. Later that night, her mother's brother hosted a marathon game that went until daybreak.
Another uncle broke out the dice table soon after he arrived for lunch. In this simple game, you bet on the numbers that will come up on a set of 3 dice, shaken under a cup. As far as I could tell, the "house" did very well that day.
