Sun Moon Lake
This resort destination is in the mountainous central region of Taiwan. It's best known as a honeymoon spot, but we went there with my family on the day after our wedding. The region was hit very badly by the 1999 earthquake, so many of the hotels are still rebuilding. The view below is from the balcony of our hotel, which only reopened last year.
One of the best sights at Sun Moon Lake is the Wenwu temple, which slopes up a hillside from its main gate.
The front is guarded by two gigantic stone lions, supposedly the largest in Asia.
This pagoda was built by Chiang Kai-shek, in honor of his mother. The lake was his favorite vacation spot in Taiwan, and the most famous hotel today was his former guesthouse.
Of course, we had to climb the pagoda....
.... and ring the memorial bell at the top.
