Andy Vogel's Taiwan Pages

Yeliou
Yeliou is a small coastal town on the northeast tip of Taiwan, about 30 minutes drive from Taipei, best known for the incredible stone formations caused by erosion.
These structures are described as 'mushroom caps', formed when wind and water erode the softer layer of sandstone under the darker top layer.
Most of them are about 6-8 feet tall. You are allowed to walk in and around the mushroom caps.

This area is a tourist park that extends onto a small peninsula, with walking paths and bridges.
The small 'nubs' in the distance are the beginning phase of selective erosion that ultimately creates these structures.
The is one of the best known images of Taiwan. When viewed from this angle, it is said to look like Queen Victoria of England. They say that this will probably only last another 15-20 years, before the neck thins too much to support the weight above, and then it will topple like so many others.
A framed view of my dad!
