Enjoy, Travis!
After ~2
years of WH playing, I have finally lost to the Empire at
>500
points. Well, it really wasn't "Empire", but one of those
specialized
lists. It wasn't a pretty sight...
For those
not familiar with the CoU list, there is no black
powder at
all.
White Wolf Knights only (one can be inner circle). He can give
the
"cavalry hammer" to said units, confering a
+1S at all times. He
had a
large unit of Inner Circle White Wolf knights, led by a grand
master. S5 all the time. Ouch. He is also allowed to include a
Warrior
Priest in each Warrior of Ulric unit (free company)
for only
75 points
(95 normally). So, in a league where you need territories
to get
more than 2 characters, he had 5. Here is the highlights:
My army:
High Liche Priest
Liche Priest on steed with staff of ravening (3d6 S2
hits, PL4)
Prince
with great weapon
16
archers, standard
24 spear skellies
24 HW/SH skellies
2x5 light
cav
8 heavy cav
3 carrion
3 ushabti
16 tomb
guard full command
Catapult,
skulls of the foe
His army:
Grand
master
Seneschal
3 free
company units, each with warrior priest
Teutogen guard
8 White
wolf knights
12 inner
circle white wolf knights
2 hunting
hound packs led by hunt masters
2x10
huntsmen
Spearmen
Messenger
scenario: get 3 models off your opponent's table edge for
extra VP.
Without going turn by turn, here is what happened:
I hit his
scouts with the staff of ravening, killing 4 and panicking
them
(they rally next turn). Carrion charges them and kills them off
after 2
rounds of combat. I hit his spearmen with the catapult and
panic
them. They rally, but do nothing the rest of the game except
claim a
table 1/4. My heavy cav charges some hounds and catch
them
as the flee. They get flanked by free company next turn and
obliterated.
Joy. At least the overrun by the free company only
goes
4" and blocks any movement by the smaller WWK unit. My one
light cav unit eventually it taken out by the
huntsmen after 5 rounds
of shooting...my guys couldn't hit sand if they fell off their horses!
His big
WWK unit charges my HW skellies. Does
some wounds, but I
raise
them back to a total of 20. I hit his flank with my speark-
skellie unit, but taking S5 hits means every hit will
wound, and I
couldn't
make a 6+ AS to save my skin. Both units end up crumbling,
as he
prevented me from raising any more models to those units. My
archers
take out the other hound unit on the charge and end up in
combat
with another free-company unit. The archers die after 2
combat
rounds. His Teutogen guard charge
the ushabti and kill on on
the
charge. 6 attacks back gets me 1 hit and no wounds. I
crumble
on combat
resolution. He overruns. And after some reforms I get the
tomb
guard to charge his rear. They are autobroken from
combat and
flee 7, I
go 6. They rally and I end up hitting him again and
chasing
him off the table. I kamakazie my carrion into the
rear of
one of
his free company units to try to keep him from getting the
charge
off on my TG unit, but I whiff on my attacks and he kills
enough
that they poof on combat res. Fortunately, one of his
messengers
blocks any charges by this unit. His small WWK unit
eventually
hits the flank of the TG unit, and I forget one time to
use my
prince's incant. I can't go back and this forces me to burn
an extra
LP incant to help the combat instead of helping elsewhere.
I end up
losing the TG unit, but the prince in it is still alive. He
takes out
Seneschal in a challenge, though.
All in
all, I think I made about 2% of my armor saves all game. My
range
guesses with the catapult were for the most part spot on, but
they kept
scattering 8 or 10". The wind was swirling pretty good...I
even had
a partial hit on one of the catapult crew it was that bad!
Highlight
of the game: Getting a full 18 hits off with the staff of
ravening
on one of his free company units. Did only 5 unsaved wounds
total,
though. At least O got 'em below 1/2 strength.
At the
end, I had all 3 characters, the catapult, and a light cav
unit left
on the table. I was able to get all 3 of my messengers off
the table
(150 VP each) and he got none, but that wasn't enough to
swing
things. I gave up 4 standards and 3 table quarters...700VP
right
there...oof (I got only 1 standard). I lose 2274 to
1322.
Well, at
least the woodies are still undefeated against the
empire.
ASIDE:
Speaking of Woodies, the latest rumor (apparently
spread
around at
the last GT) is that the woodies are being released
in July
in the
redshirts were touting at the Katy GW store. Every model is
being
redone
and the list is changing quite a bit (ogre-sized tree-kin,
waywatchers with killing blow, and a 9" tall treeman lord
character).
Nothing official has been said, though. Gotta start
saving up
the $...with all the recent price increases, it'll cost a
pretty
penny to get a full army now.
BACK TO
THE TK: This does not bode well for me at the Hombre this
coming
weekend... I'm using the exact same list, but with the
addition
of 2 tomb swarm bases and a few more defensive magic items.
Could be a looooooooong weekend.
