I found this on the internet and added my own comments

VAMPIRE, in folklore, animated corpse that sucks the blood of humans.
Belief in vampires has existed from the earliest times and has given
rise to an aray of legends and superstitions. They were most commonly
thought of as spirits or demons that left their graves at night to
seek and enslave their victims; (a)it was thought that the victims
themselves became vampires. (b)The vampire could be warded off with a
variety of charms, amulets, and herbs and could finally be killed by
driving a stake through its heart or by cremation.(c)Sometimes the
vampire assumed a nonhuman shape, such as that of a bat or wolf.Probably
the most famous vampire myth in literature is Count Dracula in the
novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.

(a) Tales and Myths often state that the victim of a vampire
would also become an immoral and live an eternal life feeding,
just as his killer had done.Fourtunatly this is not true in that
the world would be over populated with vampires and they would
feed off eachother. See Becoming of the Night to learn more.

(b)A vampire can not be frighted by any object of superstition such
as a religious symbol or the odor from garlic , "holy water", bells,
or candles (vampires are quite fond of candles).

(c)Vampirism and lycanthropy are two completly different things 1
