How to configure Desktop Themes in Windows XP

This article describes how to configure your desktop environment by using desktop themes.

A desktop theme is a predefined set of window elements that help you personalize your computer to give it a distinctive appearance. Themes affect the overall appearance of your desktop, including the background, screen saver, icons, fonts, colors, windows, mouse pointers, and sounds.

In Microsoft Windows XP, you can use the Windows Classic look as your theme, switch desktop themes, or modify elements of existing themes to create new themes and customize your desktop with the appearance that you want.

How Do I Install Desktop Themes In XP From Zip Files?

You have to manually create a "Plus!" folder in which to store your desktop themes. To do so, go to C:\Program Files\ and create a sub folder named "Plus!" Next, create a sub folder under "Plus!" named "Themes." or use this utility I found, that will make the folders for you. Use this utility. It not only makes the folder for you to install your themes, but it also makes a Desktop Themes folder in your Start Menu.  Desktop Folders Utility

After you have made the "Plus" sub folder, and the "Themes" sub folder under Plus. Now your ready to unzip the Desktop Themes to that folder.

To put Desktop Themes in XP Home Edition or Professional is easy. A box will come up asking if you want to open or save this file. You click to open the file. Then your winzip box will open and you will see .exe theme file. Now just double click on the file, and click next. The program will put the theme in "C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes" folder that you just made, that's it. The program gives you an option to change the letter drive if you have your themes on another drive like I had. Example: E:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes. Just highlight the drive letter and change it or use your curser and backspace it and put your letter in.

How Do I Pick The Desktop Themes I Want In XP

To select a different desktop theme, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display. Or, right-click an empty area of the desktop, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Themes tab, and then select a new theme in the Theme list.
A preview of the theme is displayed in the Sample box.

3. Select the theme that you want, and then click Apply And OK. The desktop theme is applied to your computer.

Royale Theme for WinXP

New Bliss Description: Royale Theme - A new theme, potentially destined for Windows XP. (Freeware)
Royale Theme is a new theme, potentially destined for Windows XP, that has leaked out of Microsoft and onto the web. The theme appears to have come out of a beta version of Media Center 2005 that was in testing.

The theme is not a substantially different incarnation of the existing of Luna, the current default theme for Windows XP. You can see the main changes in the screenshot to your right; one could describe it as being a 'glass mod' of Luna.

As Microsoft knows, it is very hard to please everyone when it comes to themes. However, I think they can be reasonably certain that most people will like this new version of Luna.

Microsoft New Zealand is making available some free desktop backgrounds for use on your computer. Includes the New Zealand version of Bliss; the world-famous directional sign in Bluff; and the theme pack for Royale. Check back each month as we add more!

If you would like to preview these before downloading, visit: http://www.microsoft.com/nz/windows/bliss/default.mspx

I tried the theme, and it was very easy to install in Windows XP. Pretty awesome theme to have....

  1. Click Start, and then click Run,
  2. In the Open box, type themes, and then click OK,
  3. Configure the theme you want, and then click OK.

To Configure Desktop Themes in Windows 2000 Pro

  1. You can configure desktop themes in Windows 2000 Pro. Oddly themes seem to be an afterthought in Win 2000. You have to manually create a "Plus!" folder in which to store your desktop themes. To do so, go to C:\Program Files\ and create a sub folder named "Plus!" Next, create a sub folder under "Plus!" named "Themes." or use this utility I found, that will make the folders for you. If the wallpaper doesn't show up by using the run, open box, type themes way. Use this utility. It not only makes the folder for you, to install your themes, but it also makes a Desktop Themes folder in your Start Menu. Click on the Desktop Themes icon to pick your themes, that you want to install.  Desktop Folders Utility

  2. Windows 2000 Pro only recognizes themes with the .theme extension. It can use Win9x themes with a .the or .thm extension if you rename the extension to .theme.

Windows Me, 98SE & 95

Microsoft does not support Windows Me, 98SE and 95 anymore. That is security patches and problems with the windows problem using the older operating systems.

Microsoft only supports Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows 2000 Professional and of course the new Windows Vista versions.

If you use the older operating systems without protection from Microsoft, your out on your own. You may get spyware, viruses or a trojan virus. Good luck....
