April 15, 2004 Inside the numbers (which countries have provided military support in Iraq) -I’ve been looking for a list like this for a while and finally MSNBC decided to oblige. This list identifies who and how many troops countries around the world have contributed to the Iraq effort. Obviously the U.S.A. leads the entourage with an overwhelming presence and Great Britain follows in a commanding second. Good old Poland takes the forth position with their solid contribution of 2,400 troops behind Italy’s 3,000. What’s surprising (depending how you look at it) is you will see no representation from European powerhouses such as France and Germany. You’ll also notice no troop assistance from the greatest country at being north of the United States. Heck Mongolia lent us 180 guys to fight for peace and freedom! Notice also no representation from the continents of South America or Africa. I guess they have better things to do. Oh well, look at the list as you like. But here are the facts so far. United States 120,000 Britain 11,000 Albania 70 Australia 1,000 Azerbaijan 150 Bulgaria 470 Czech Rep. 92 Denmark 496 Dominican Rep. 300 El Salvador 360 Estonia 55 Georgia 70 Honduras 370 Hungary 300 Italy 3,000 Japan 250 (750 on the way) Kazakhstan 25 Latvia 120 Lithuania 105 Macedonia 28 Moldova 25 Mongolia 180 Netherlands 1,100 New Zealand 60 Nicaragua 230 Norway 150 Philippines 95 (175 on the way) Poland 2,400 Portugal 130 Romania 400 Singapore 200 Slovakia 69 (120 on the way) South Korea 675 (3,000 on the way) Spain 1,300 Thailand 443 (30 on the way) Ukraine 2,000 Sources: Reuters news reports/GlobalSecurity.org |
