Debbie Turner (Marta) April, 2003

In April, 2003, I had the chance to make a little interview with Debbie Turner, who played Marta in the movie. Comercial veteran, Debbie Turner screen tested on February 7. First she tried out for the part of young Gretl. But Wise wanted her for the part of Marta instead.

How did you get the part as Marta in "The Sound of Music"? Can you tell us a little about the audition!
I interviewed with my sister, Michele, who auditioned for the part of Brigitta. I sang Do Re Mi. A couple of months later I was asked to do a screen test.

What was your favorite scene to film?
The Do Re Mi sequence was great fun.

Who did the most outtakes during the shooting?
Not sure, although I heard that Julie & Christopher got a bad case of the giggles when they did the scene in the gazebo where they kiss for the first time.

What was it like, as a child, to work with Julie Andrews?
She was so nice, just like she is in the movie. She would sing to us with her guitar, off camera.

We know that Angela and Heather were inseparable. Of all the children, who did you spend the most time with on the set?
I used to follow Duane Chase around, just because I thought he was pretty cool.

How was your life after 'Sound', did it change after the film?
A bit rocky at first, going back to school where the other children saw me differently after the film. But now, life is great..

Can you tell us any fun stories about what happened behind the scenes on 'Sound'?
We had a tutor who taught us school three hours every day She had the funniest sneeze....big ugggghhhh sound then a tiny little choo! Duane used to imitate her sneeze perfectly (when she wasn't around, of course)

Who of the other cast members have you kept in touch with, and when did you last see them?
All of the kids. Saw all but Nicky in January. (he lives in Australia)

Where do you live right now?
In a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota USA

Did you attend college? If you did, what college did you go to?
Yes, USC (University of Southern California)

Do you still run your floral business?
Yes. I am a designer and coordinator of weddings, large parties and events.

Can you tell us a little about your family? Have your children followed in your footsteps?!
I have four daughters. My oldest is in college majoring in Photography (very artistic), I have a senior in college, who wishes to be a doctor some day. I have one in 10th grade who wants to be a veterinarian, and my youngest, is a singer and wants to be a professional singer (maybe a country singer).

What is your most beloved memory from making 'Sound'?
Holding hands and talking with Richard Haydn. (Uncle Max) He always made me laugh.

Thank you Debbie for taking the time to answer our questions!
