I left Tucson, AZ at about 7:15am with the full intention of moving back to Texas. I had already lived in Lubbock and Brownfield, so I decided to check out Amarillo. Somehow I never made it that far when I lived in Lubbock and Brownfield, so I had no idea what it was like. I was about 100 miles from Carlsbad, NM when I saw a storm building ahead of me.

I started to drive under it, and saw what appeared to be a lowering NW of the rainshaft. I knew the storm was moving SE I was almost to Hobbs by this time, and had driven a long way, but despite this I turned around and ended up driving NW towards Artesia to get on the back side of the storm for a better view. This was the second time I had chased while moving (with everything I own in my car).

A view from the W side of the storm

It was a beautiful storm, and I was tempted to follow it further, but I was still very far from Amarillo and it would be getting dark soon. I headed back towards Hobbs, encountering heavy rain, winds, and pea sized hail.
