Sea Lions were playing in the water around us, you can see one near the horizon in this picture.
The big male in the foreground of this shot was consistently barking, asserting his social dominance, chasing other males off his turf and maybe warning his family about the pesky kayakers.
Kayaking is an amazing water sport.  You can get up close to sea life and coastline that you just couldn't see any other way.  The water was about 66 degrees but we were dry and warm -- until we tried to get back on the beach.  We thought surfing the waves back in would be the fun, easy part, but you know what, kayaks weren't made for surfing.  I caught a wave and my boat started turning to my port side (left).  I had seen video of experienced paddlers using their paddles as a rudder which I tried.  It turned my 'yak allright -- further port side which sent me tumbling like last weeks dirty laundry.  Luckily Jake mentioned that if we rolled, lean forward.  I remebered and did exactly that, rolling once and popping up on the beach!  Jennifer used the same, uh-hum, technique.
We're still laughing about it and can't wait to get back out there to try "broaching" a wave which is riding it into the beach sideways.
