John Harkins- Continued
"Meg & I have both retired and live now in Old City, the historic corner of center city Philadelphia, recently revived with conversions of old factories and warehouses into condominia.  We are enjoying the urban pleasures.

With retirement we have both taken on a variety of volunteer assignments and serve on a number of boards.  I am honored to be a member of the George School Committee, along with Jim Whitely.

I have fond memories of my years at George School.  Some of those memories are quite vivid.  However, I think that most of the time I must have been in an adolescent fogbank."

Peg writes-
"Who would believe it's been 50 years!  Remember seeing those ancient people cluttering the hallways when we came down to our mailboxes?  The 4 year George School experience was awesome.

I'm sure we're going to miss Nancy Longnecker Hubby.  Her death was a shock.  She was so dedicated to G.S. and she was one of our distinguished alumnae.  I knew her from my hometown before G.S.

Although I am now residing in the GA mountains (Big Canoe by name) and partaking in all the activities in my new community (golf, tennis, yoga, bridge, watercolor painting, Bible study etc.), I still drive back to my hometown in NJ to visit my friends and family in NYC and PA.  After 30 years of teaching high school it's so much fun to go back and see so many "kids" I taught come to me and express their appreciation.

My latest trip was one to behold; Machu Picchu and the Galapagos.  Learning about the mysteries of the Incas and mixing it with creatures on the Ecuadorian islands was an experience I will never forget.  I'm going back."

"I was born in Chicago, Illinois. In my early years I had lived there, Olney, IL, and Buchanan, Michigan.  After graduating from Michigan Tech, I followed my parents who had just moved to Clearwater, FL.  Back then, the military draft was still in effect, so to give myself more choice, I enlisted in the Signal Corp, which led to a 2-1/4 year assignment in Naples, Italy.  I was lucky enough to be too late for Korea and too early for Nam.

My work history is varied.  News and feature photographer for the Clearwater, FL, Sun, sales for Universal Pictures, YMCA Program Director, and, for nearly 18 years, a production support analyst for IBM.  I went into involuntary retirement in 1995 and less than two years later, through a contracting company, returned to IBM doing much the same work as before.

The reason I still have strong feelings for George School, besides the people, stem from the beginning of two life-long interests- photography and theater.  Often I have combined the two.

I now live in Southbury, Connecticut, with my wife of 35 years, Janet.  We have no children.  Besides still working full time, I coach Special Olympics Softball and Bocce, am vice-chairman of the Southbury Zoning Board of Appeals, volunteer as a tour guide at the Danbury, CT, Railway Museum, and we try to work in at least two vacation trips a year.  One other special interest we both have is attending the London premiers of James Bond movies."

Peirce was in our class for one year and Bob Freedman recently "found" him in Conn. He says he remembers GS fondly and is interested in the reunion and renewing old acquaintences and friendships.  Welcome back, Peirce, it's nice to have you aboard.
