***Roosevelt's Secret War
Non-Fiction by Joseph Persico

"It is about espionage in World Was II and FDR's heavy reliance on intelligence information.  The unifying theme is the sequence of precursors to the present-day CIA.  The research is good, summarizing the intelligence information that became available in the run-up to the war and during the war.  One gains an insight into Roosevelt and other key players. It is a good read."

PrairyErth by William Least Heat-Moon (non-fiction)
"The book is set in Kansas, and is a collection of "vignettes.  Mostly it is about prairie, with a lot of history thrown in.  There is no necessary order to the stories, so you can stop and start anywhere and skip around.  Quotations are plentiful, an amusing example of which is Mark Twain's description of a coyote, on page 136.  This is a case where you may read only some of the tales and not otherwise ever finish the book."

Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon (non-fiction)
"Blue Highways refers to the color of the least traveled roads on maps.  There are many such byways in America that take us through scenic, interesting, historical and sometimes spectacular areas.  This is a book about the author's travels and encounters along a number of these out-of-the-way routes.  The people he meets and his experiences are interesting, but perhaps more interesting is the ideas one gets about setting out by car to capture similar unexpected adventures for oneself."
