Womens hockey teams are welcome and encouraged to participate in The Vince Ryan Memorial Scholarship Tournament. In 1999 the tournament saw an unfulfilled need,female hockey was under-developed and the number of female players in the province was low. Female hockey programs in other privinces were seeing a 400%
increase in participation. Tournament organizers agreed to open this traditionally 35 and over male event to include a female division. Realizing the lack of thirty five and over female players,the event would offer a 19 and over and under female category. In 1999,it's inaugral year,four teams registered in each category for a total of eight teams in the female division. The new division proved to be a crowd pleaser. The tournament is providing a system for female recreational hockey to develop and the organizing committee hopes to see this division grow to the point where it will become its own event. At present the female teams are restricted to ages 19 and over.
