Vrhy's Critter Guide
As a hunting trader with no magic or other special abilities Ive had to learn a good deal about what to hunt and how to hunt them on my own. I hope this guide will aid other hunters, both trader and nontrader alike. My estimate on what critters to hunt is based on having ranks of weapons, armor, and defensive skills equal to about three ranks per circle.
Shipyard Rat:(1-7) In Crossing Shipyard and Saltyard in Haven. Tend to swarm. Easy to learn low ranks in any weapon or defensive skill. In Haven be careful of the crabs that live with them. Skinnable, nothing carried. Good first critter to hunt as well as for training new weapons.
Hog:(2-8) Out Crossing's west gate. Live in same area as goblins. Not much of a threat other then they can swarm slightly and goblins might show up while you fight the hogs. Skinnable. Carry nothing.
Goblin:(3-10) Out Crossing's west gate and Haven's north gate. Those with swords are more dangerous then those without or those who use a carving knife. Goblins near Crossing tend to swarm. Skinnable, carry coins and boxes. Those between Crossing's west gate and the brook carry shields and short swords. Those near haven carry carving knives and leather greaves. They start to run when weapon skill nears 30 unless more then one is present.
Crab:(4-12) In Haven's saltyard and occasionally outside of it. Hard to kill and can be very dangerous for young hunters. I suggest leaving these alone completely unless training a new weapon, too easy for them to stun and kill a young hunter. Skinnable. Carry nothing. Can train weapons past 30 ranks.
Goblin Shaman:(7-14)Outside west gate of Haven. Casts fire shards and stone fists. I recommend having a shield to fight these. Found with eels and mountain rams. NonSkinnable. Carry coins, gems and boxes. I stopped learning any weapon skill on these at 40 ranks.
Wild Boars:(5-15)Outside Haven's east gate on the deer trail. Sometimes charge from pole range but not that hard to evade and doesnt do much damage or stun for long. Live in same area as Blue Boobries. Skinnable. Carry nothing.
Grass Eel:(8-16) Outside west gate of Haven. Found with shaman and mountain rams. I advise mid 20s in weapon, armor and defense skills to fight these. They teach weapons past 40, not sure how far though. Skinnable. Carry nothing.
Wood Troll:(9-15) Near Crossing NE gate, also north of Lang. These are a nice filler monster for the transition from shamans to dusk ogres. They tend to live with other critters, but most of those are easier to kill then the trolls. They dont attack too often, so arent too good for defenses, but work weapons nicely into 50s. Some other creatures fight them, bears for instance. This makes for even safer combat. Only risk with them is if other creatures they live with come in and you end up with too many opponents at once. Nonskinable, drop coin, gems and boxes.
Ram:(8-18)Outside Haven's west gate. Found with eels and shaman.  They have a nasty habit of charging from pole range, delivering a hard hit and a stun. Not too hard one on one, but make fighting eels and shaman interesting at times. Skinnable. Carry nothing.
Dusk Ogre:(12-20) In tunnels past the shamans and rams. At low 40s in weapons and armor it takes a long time to kill these. They can swarm at times and Wolf Spiders sometimes wander into their territory. Id suggest 50s in weapons and defense skills for these. Nonskinnable, but they carry decent boxes, coins and gems.
Sand Sprite:(20-35) In ship near Ratha. I suggest mid 50s in weapons to even try these, and even then take a hunting partner because they swarm often. Ive heard people hunting them with 40s in weapons and defenses, but those people had high reflex and agility and werent traders. Id never suggest hunting them solo, again, because they do swarm a lot. They dont hit very hard though and train multi extremely well. Nonskinable, drop coins, gems and boxes. Nice critter to fill pouches to sell if you can handle the swarms.
Unfortunatelty that's all Ive managed to hunt thus far. As I hunt new creatures I will try to update these pages. If you find my information on critters seems wrong for one reason or other, or you have information on a critter not listed and would like to share the information, please contact me and Ill check, fix or add the information when I can.
