Join us for a tour of the 1883 barkentine GAZELA, one of the tall ships at Penn's Landing.  It was built to carry fishermen to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.  Every spring she would leave Lisbon, laden with as many as 35 dories stacked on deck like drinking cups, a crew of 40 men (35 fishermen/sailors, 2 cooks, 2 mates and the captain) and a couple of apprentices.  Her cargo would be full of salt as ballasts.  The salt would be used for the fish that were caught, preserving them for the long trip home.  Six months might be spent at sea.Chris Blaydon, a member of the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, will be our lecturer and tour guide.  There will be a slide presentation and refreshments at the Chart House at Penn's Landing.  Please wear comfortable shoes as we will be touring the ship.  A selection of hors d'oeuvres of shrimp, crab and scallops will be served along with a cash bar.  Enrollment is limited so please sign up early.

Lyndhurst Mansion
Our annual bus excursion is in the final planning stages but promises to be a wonderful event.  We are going to tour some of the many fine Victorian landmarks of the Hudson River Valley,  During the first day, we are hoping to take a boat cruise from New York City's Pier 78 to Tarrytown.  Some attractions that we are planning to visit nd tour in the Tarrytown area are:  National Trust property, Lyndhurst (an 1838 Gothic Revival mansion designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and owned after 1880 by railroad magnate Jay Gould); Kykuit (houe and gardens that were to home to four generations of the Rockefeller family); and Sunnyside (a very unique 1835 Romantic/Dutch Colonial Revival style estate once occupied by author Washington Irving.)

Saturday night accomodations will be at the
Hilton Hotel in Pearl River.  The second day has several possibilities and more details will be shared when they are finalized (including itinerary and cost).
