Myth

Long ago, darkness reigned over the night. People were afraid and remained inside their shelters from sundown until sunrise. The goddess Selene saw their fear and gave light to their nocturnal world by driving her moon chariot across the starry sky. She followed her brother Helios, who rode the sun and caught his shining rays on her magnificent silver chariot, then cast them down to earth as moonbeams. She felt pride in the way the earthlings were comforted by her light.
But one night when she had abandoned her chariot to walk upon the earth, she noticed that in times of trouble many people lost all hope. Their despair bewildered her. After considering their plight, she knew how she could make her moon the greatest gift from the gods.

From then on she drove around the earth and each night caught her brother's rays from a different angle. This way the face of the moon was everchanging. People watched the moon decrease in light every night, until it could no longer be seen from the earth. Then after three nights of darkness, a crescent silver returned and the moon increased in light until it was fully illuminated as before. Selene did this to remind people that their darkest times can lead them to their brightest.

The ancients understood Selene's gift in the lunar phases. Each night when they gazed at the moon, they knew Selene was telling them to never give up hope.

A long hiss of air escaped Catty's lungs.
She stood motionless, waiting for the person to speak. When they didn't, she rushed to give an explaination. "I'm sorry," she said, assuming it had to be a security guard. "I took the elevator, then the lights went out and I got lost."
The person didn't answer. Theirt silence baffled her.
She tried to trun her head to see who stood behind her but when she did, a gloved hand gently stopped her.
"What?" Catty whispered nervously.
"Dont' turn," the person said softly. The voice was magnetic, young sounding, and definutely a guy, It also seemed familiar.
"Who are you?" she asked, still trying to identify the voice.
Then he spoke her name quietly. "Catty."
A shock ran through her. "How do you know my name? Do I know you?"
"I have something for you," he said, ingnoring her questions.
There was a rustling sound behind her and then the gloved hand reached over her shoulder and gave her something that looked like a thick piece of paper.
She took it and recognized the feel of parchment. She held it close to her eyes. It was a lavishly decorated manuscript. The gold first lettes caught the light from the hallway and sparkled. Strange birds and exotic animals hidden in a tangle of foliage and fairy-tale lanscapes lined borders. "You're giving this to me?" Catty asked. "Is it stolen?"
"It belongs to you."
"Me?" She smoothed her hand over the swirling script.
"Take the manuscript and use it," he insturcted.
"Use it how?"
"The manuscript contains the answers to your questions."
She wondered who he was. She wanted to turn and see his face but everytime she tried, his hand held her cheek firmly.
"I don't understand," she murmured at last. "What questions should I have?"
He paused for a long moment. "Read the manuscript. Then you will know."
