Derekcon 47 quick recap - By Jamie the Rash

Game 1 - Late Imperial Roman vs. Early Imperial Roman - This was an interesting game, as I was fielding a late Roman army that maximized the amount of RA calvary to take advantage of the Derekcon special rules.  Robert was emphasizing static fire power through use of artillery and large archer blocks.  The archer blocks were interesting, 24 man blocks of LHI B 1/2 Sh as I recall.  Early Imperial was outscouted so I threw opens on his side of the table and watched him deploy in a long line covering the table.  There was a lot of firepower in the center and the far right was anchored on a patch of woods, so I went to the left with most of  calvary units and used my foot to screen most of his army.  On the left I methodically drove back the supporting troops and was uncovering the flankof the legion when we stopped for time.  In the center my screening troops were being pushed back by the Early Romans but I had plenty of table space to give up.  Overall, a nice game by a new player.

Game 2 - Late Imperial Roman vs. Feudal Japanese - I threw open spaces across Steve's outscouted deployment area to keep him out of terrain as much as possible.  The Japanese deployed in the available brush with ashigaru and samurai in the gaps in between.  I looked at his deployment and chose to attack on the left again, the lack of terrain over there favoring my calvary.  The game was quick and decisive, my RA calvary passed six waiver checks to avoid being shot back and then Steve promptly rolled five or six ones on waiver checks making our tactics moot.

Game 3 - Late Imperial Roman vs. Late Imperial Roman - A civil war clash at the end, my cav heavy list against Derek's artillery and chariot gimmick list.  I threw opens into Derek's outscouted deployment area again and Derek tossed some terrain in the middle of the table.  Derek's deployment on the left was a little weak, no force marched light infantry in front of several auxilia units.  The rest of his deployment was legionairres and other troops backed up by three units of light bolt shooters.  I pondered force marching my calvary command past the woods on the left and trying for a quick kill on the left flank before he could react.  I went for it recalling Derek's love of RD troops and thinking most if not all might be RD troops caught in the open.  This also made for a very speedy game, as my remaining foot could screen Derek's foot but would be steadily driven back if the attack failed.  Sadly for everyone rooting against Derek, this wasn't really my day.  Three of four auxilia that my rapid calvary charge caught in the open were RB, I only caught one RD in the open.  So out of four waivers, 1 RB aux failed its waiver and the RD passed.  The RD was in a clump of several other units, if it had failed this would have been a disaster for Derek.  Anyway, the EHC vs. Auxilia fight was bloody, units routing and exhausting rapidly on both sides in a bound or two.  Unfortunately for me, the routing aux units didn't really sweep any other units away and the RD Aux crushed the HC unit that I had sent at, in turn sweeping a succession of my units.  I thought it was a decent plan even though it failed in the end because I could see Derek sweating that bound as the calvary charged in.

We could also have said this last tournament's theme was the Roman Empire and the others. Look at the armies ran listed in the results below.

Go Spartans!!! Inspired by the movie and this time not outnumbered 300 to 250,000. They did a great job. The army is a bit slow for my tastes but I found that force marching about half the army to the table center help get opponents motivated to mix it up a bit.

Recon, Tampa FL
May 2-4, 2008

Hey Guys,

Cold Wars/MegaCon weekend is past and it's time to get serious about our near and dear PREMIERE Historical Miniatures game convention.

Better known to one and all as RECON 2008!!! May 2-4!

I will of course be there running my usual DBA events.

This time around it's two DBA tournaments and one Hordes of the Things fantasy game for kids.

Check the www.hmgs-south.com website for the games submitted so far.

Hopefully you all plan to be there as we have some very important Society business to discuss (and vote on.) This vote may very well determine the direction we go in in the future.

The most important business of all however is that we all have a good time.

And the more the merrier!

So lets go over the checklist:

Have you?

Also as a reminder, I am YOUR representative on the Board of Directors! If you have complaints and issues you want addressed you need only send me an email [ here or to my home martins333@aol.com .]  I will bring it to the attention of the board ASAP. Believe me, I know how to pester people!

Results of the 8th Annual
Henry Brewer- Gus Sailors Memorial FoG Tournament

Hi listers,
Thanks to all who traveled a long distance to play in the Henry
Brewer – Gus Sailors Memorial Ancients Tournament, especially the Ohio
boys, Doug and Jeff!!! I had a blast being the umpire, and actually learned a lot.

From my view, the brackets were a success. There were 3 brackets,
Ancients Alpha and Beta, and a Medieval. The players played in their
Brackets for the 1st 3 games, then the last round I matched high
scores vs high scores. Congradulations to Ricky Jones for 1st place
and Lance White for 2nd in the Largest FoG tournament in North
American ever !!!

Woot!!!

Also thanks to Osprey and Rudy Scott Nelson of Time Portal Hobbies
for the prizes!! Very nice indeed. Rudy is a great friend of the hobby
And deserves our support!!
Best regards
Your furry pal
Joey
