The coat of arms of the Honourable Helen Maksagak, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, shows how heraldry adapts to the Canadian experience. The shield contains an Inuksuk, an Inuit stone marker. Like an Inuksuk, Ms. Maksagak is a guide and a stable point of reference. In place of the traditional steel helmet, the crest is an Inuit parka hood, which celebrates her culture. The supporters, a caribou and a wolf, represent the abundance of food the land provides for people, as well as beings with whom we share the land.
