Rumour has it that some big changes and announcements are on the way very, very, soon. Stay tuned!

News:     May 2, 2009

After hibernating for the winter the boys are crawling out of the woodwork and back into action. Recording action for one. The thus far untitled Barnacles Senior CD is now a third of the way finished and is awaiting a new studio that is under construction in an undisclosed location. Several guest appearances by other homestate talent are rumoured to be in the works, and as we've discovered from previous peaks into rehearsal activity, some very different instrumentation flavours will be evident when the finished work is released.

Meanwhile, Barnacle Brian is now hosting an open Mic night down at the St. Charles riverfront at the City Club. So come on out and bring a song, guitar, banjo, clarinet, or whatever floats your musical boat, and don't forget to bring a friend or three and join the ever growing open Mic night on Thusday nights at the City Club at 300 S. Main St. in St Charles, MO (636) 724-9600. Or just come out and catch Barnacle songwriting members showcasing some new tunes (some of which may be on the next CD). See you there!

The rumour is, there's a live "semi-official" bootleg CD about to come out in limited edition. And in similar news, which is cetainly not just rumour, the band is working hard on the next CD. In an informal interview by long-time band follower, and contributing Barnacles' news writer, Microwave Evans, (thats me) band member Brian Kious said, "we're just going to record a boatload of songs and pick out what fits best together". Bandmate Casey Wollberg is excited about the new CD. His song contributions on this coming CD are really phenomenal. Barnacle Randy Belt's thoughts on Casey's contributions "I think they are really great. After we introduced the new songs and took them to the full band to practice them out and work them over, the band effort is the tightest we've had yet." Brian agreed, "There's more of a full band effort much more collaboration than we've had before. Probably because rehearsing in a smaller area draws everyone together more. That and the excitement about each new song is really high."

Drummer Steve Meyers continues, "this is true. there's much more excitement not only about the new songs, but the approach to them this time around. Its more like, what does this song neeeeeed? What does that one ASK for? And then we rehearse them and it all comes together more naturally than ever before". Brian added that the songs are currently divided into light and dark songs. He said there was enough for two full length CDs.

Randy mentioned that it was a matter of, "should we make a light album and a dark album or should we mix it up? I tend to like the idea of just doing something different for each one. Dark for us means kinda of scary FEELing and moody, not in message so much as as in feel and just the overall emotion conveyed in each track. I have always been known to have the lighter, brighter songs, but some of them this time have a more darker edge and/or surreal twist. (Steve broke in with: "I think when this album is done, we will look back and say, wow! That was a milestone of creative achievment. Did we really do that?)

As I sat in on one or two rehearsals with some songs that will be appearing on the new CD, I can truly say, I was really amazed. The boys have really outdone themselves for sure. I was sitting at a table behind the practice area, when Brian whips out a violin and starts adding the most compelling riffs to a couple of songs Randy and Casey had written. Then Randy grabs the violin bow and starts cutting across the bottoom strings of his bass (which was his semi-hollow bodied Hofner copy) which sounded about identical to a cello! So all of a sudden there's this makeshift strings section. and its all thinking our=tside the box. Thats one thing that is going to make this next CD so phenomenal. It's so outside the box.

And as a long time follower of The Barnacles, I can tell you that they have necver cared a whit what the industry thinks at the time or is doing. they are pretty rebellious in that sense. I guess thats why when I would go out to a Barnacles show, I'd see quite a mix of fans, or curious onlookers, from punk rockers with mohawks to hippies, cowboys and bikers, and whatever walk of life there is. The Barnacles just seem to appeal to about everyone. Well, I'll have to cut my article short until I have more news and insights on how the CD is progressing. Until then,

Ciao,

News:     August 28, 2007

It's finally done!!!

Expect an Autumn release date soon for CQD.

In fact, "Punctuated", the first single from the new album by the Barnacles (and their long-awaited follow-up to Inland & Otherwise) is now available for download on the British mp3 site www.intomusic.co.uk.

Also, news but not new, Casey Wollberg is back in the lineup supplying deutoronimous rhythm guitar and levititcatious harmony vocals! The Barnacles have returned to quartet status for the first time since September 2003.*

The new album "C.Q.D." will feature 11 songs all written by the band, mixed and mastered "in-house" using the Smooth B mobile studio. It was recorded in at least 6 different locations... from Benld, IL to Ironton, MO and witnessed the ups and downs of a band in motion. The album has an energy not even witnessed in the previous two albums combined as the Barnacles add a more rock twist.

C.Q.D. is a record made by a band in transition. Kevin Hartman who was the guitar foil for Inland & Otherwise was included on one or two tracks on this one and Casey joined back up for the final stages of recording and has already been onstage for the last three performances of the new schedule.

*This of course doesn't count the numerous guest spots where Kevin Hartman, Jarrod Burkemper or Casey himself actually sat in.
