Meeting: Columbian House Residents

Purpose: To inform residents of schedule of construction. To hear and respond to

Resident’s concerns.

A preliminary construction schedule was handed out and reviewed.

·        The fence that will be constructed around the underground parking excavation and student residence construction site will also have a plastic liner for both visual privacy and slight cut down of dust.

·        Trees marked with red “X” will come down week of Sept. 29th – Oct 3rd including 2 weeping birch in front of Columbian House.

·        Excavation truck route will be via Military Road; exit route south-east end of Columbian.

·        Bulk of the excavation will take 3 weeks beginning on or around Oct. 6th – this will be the noisiest sustained work

Resident’s Concerns (response in italic)

Parking lot/exterior lighting ~ parking lot lights ought to be working, Roger will check

 with UBC – Martin Paradis (site manager contacted D. Faulk Sept. 26th to

confirm that he will address this issue)

Work Schedule ~ see Preliminary Construction Schedule

Communication ~  Debra Faulk (3036) has been hired as recording secretary for the

Transition Committee & communications liaison

Advance Notice – specifically with regards to requested action (eg moving cars) ~ this

concern was noted with recognition of the need for increased all round communication

Privacy – residents will need to be aware of the fact that workers will be around; see note

 above re fencing

Gardening – where can we plant/replant that will be safe ~ the north side of Columbian is

a safe place. Any plant from old principle’s house property are there for the taking and if wanted need to be taken in the next week or so.

Soil – is anything being added to it that is dangerous ~ nothing is being specifically added

Trees – concern about stability ~ trees of concern will be cut down next week.

Visitor Parking ~ spots closest to Iona building available 5:00 pm – 7:00am (no longer

available as of 3/10); designated spots by the portables; 3 spots in front of principals house

Pathway onto UBC campus via backdoor ~ will be putting in a new staircase for the back door

and will assure access to UBC campus & Chancellor Bldg. Via Military Rd. & St.Andrew’s Lane.

Construction start times ~ 7:30 am

Discounts in housing charge because of interruptions ~ not addressed

Who is in charge ~ see above Martin Paradis (site manager); Shaun McLean (VST housing/UBC liaison); Bob Pennell (VST maintenance)

** Sept. 26th call with Martin also spoke about a place for Julia Varga’s (3012) scooter
