  OM SAHASRA SHIIRSHAA PURUSHAH SAHASRAAKSHAH
  SAHASRAPAAT/
  SA BHUUMING SARVATAH SPRITWAA-TYATISHTHADDASHAANGULAM//
  The Supreme Being has innumerable (thousands of) heads, innumerable
  eyes, innumerable feet. Even though He extends beyond the universe of
  manifested objects, He dwells in a space of ten fingers breadth (the heart of
  all beings).
  
  PURUSHA-EVEDANG SARVANG YADBHUUTANG YACHCHA BHAAVYAM/
  UTAAMRITATWASYESHAANO YADANNENAATIROHATI//
  The entire universe is the Supreme Being, what has manifested past, present
  and furture. Above all, the immortal existence, He provides nourishment for
  life.
  
  ETAAVAANASYA MAHIMAATO JYAAYAANGSHCHA PUURUSHAH/
  PAADO-SYA VISHWAA BHUUTAANI TRIPAADASYAAMRITANG DIVI//
  The entire existence manifests His Glory, which the Supreme Being
  transcends. The perceivable beings constitute His quarter part. Three
  quarters embodying immortality, remain inconceivable in the heavens.
  
  TRIPAADUURDHWA -UDAITPURUSHAH PAADO-SYEHAABHAVATPUNAH/
  TATO VISHWANG VYAKRAAMAT SAASHANAANASHANE -ABHI//
  Three parts of the Supreme Being is above birth and death, the fourth part
  manifested as the universe. From this came forth existence which eats and
  eats not.
  
  TATO VIRAADAJAAYATA VIRAAJO -ADHI PUURUSHAH/
  SAJAATO -ATYARICHYATA PASHCAADBHUUMI MATHO PURAH//
  Then Radiance came forth, and from Radiance the Supreme Being shined.
  Then He gave birth to the earth, with place both high and low.
  
  TASMAADHYAGYAAT SARVAHUTAH SAMBHRITANG PRISHADAAJYAM/
  PASHUUNGSTAANSHCHAKRE VAAYAVYAANAARANYAA
  GRAAMYAASHCHA YE//
  Then from this sacrifice of great devotion came forth animals of the air, of
  the
  forests and those who live in villages.
  
  TASMAADHYAGYAAT SARVAHUTA -RICHAH SAAMAANI JAGYIRE/
  CHHANDAANGSI JAGYIRE TASMAADHYAJUSTASMAADAJAAYATA//
  Then from this sacrifice of great devotion came forth hymns and songs of
  praise, and sacrificial mantras, the various rhythms of sacrificial scripture
  all
  were born.
  
  TASMAADASHWAA -AJAAYANTA YE KE CHOBHAYAADATAH/
  GAAVO HA JAGYIRE TASMAAT TASMAAJJAATAA -AJAAVAYAH//
  Then were born horses and cows and varieties of life all came into being in
  that sacrifice.
  
  TANG YAGYANG BARHISHI PRAUKSHAN PURUSHANG
  JAATAMAGRATAH/
  TENA DEVAA -AYAJANTA SAADHYAA -RISHAYASHCHA YE//
  The sacrifice was blessed, which gave birth to that Supreme Being. In this
  way came forth the Gods and Seers of Eternal Reality.
  
  AT PURUSHANG VYADADHUH KATIDHAA VYAKALPAYAN/
  MUKHANG KIMASYAASIITKING BAAHUU KIMUURUU PAADAA -UCHYETE/
  /
  With great thought was that Supreme Being manifest. What became His head,
  what His arms, what His thighs and what His feet?
  
  RAAHMANO-SYA MUKHAMAASIID BAAHUU RAAJANYAH KRITAH/
  UURUU TADASYA YAD VAISHYAH PADBHYAANG SHUUDRO -AJAAYATA/
  /
  From His head came the Knowers of Wisdom, from His arms kings and
  administrators. From His thighs came forth those of circulation and
  distribution, and from His feet support and sustenance.
  
  HANDRAMAA MANASO JAATASHCHAKSHOH SUURYO -AJAAYATA/
  SHROTRAAD VAAYUSHCHA PRAANASHCHA MUKHAADAGNIR
  AJAAYATA//
  His mind gave birth to The Moon, and His eyes gave birth to the Sun. From
  His ears and His breath came the Wind, and from His mouth came the Lord of
  FIre.
  
  NAABHYAA -AASIID ANTARIKSHATHANG SHIIRSHNO DHYAUH
  SAMAVART TATA/
  PADBHYAANG BHUUMIRDISHAH SHROTRAAT TATHAA LOKAANG -
  AKALPAYAN//
  From His navel came forth the atmosphere, and from His head the heavens.
  From His feet came the earth, and from his ears the directions. Thus existence
  became manifest.
  
  YAT PURUSHENA HAVISHAA DEVAA YAGYAMATANVATA/
  VASANTO-SYAASIIDAAJYANG GRIISHMA -IDHMAH SHARADDHAVIH//
  The Gods performed sacrifice with that Supreme Being as the offering. Spring
  was the clarified oil, Summer the fuel and Autumn the oblation.
  
  SAPTAASYAASAN PARIDHAYASTRIH SAPTA SAMIDHAH KRITAAH/
  DEVAA YADYAGYANG TANVAANAA -ABADHNAN PURUSHANG PASHUM//
  Seven were the limitations defined1, three times seven, the ingedients used.
  When the Gods offered that sacrifice, they bound that Supreme Being as an
  animal.
  
  YAGYENA YAGYAM AYAJANTA DEVAASTAANI DHARMAANI
  PRATHAMAANYAASAN/
  TE HA NAAKANG MAHIMAANAH SACHANTA YATRA PUURVE
  SAADHYAAH SANTI DEVAAH//
  By sacrifice, the Gods gave birth to sacrifice, and the first principles of
  eternal
  Dharma were established. Those who live according to the glorious way,
  ultimately reach the highest abode where the Gods  dwell in that ancient
  perfection.
  
  Notes for Purusha Suktam
  
        There are many possibilities for the seven
  limitiations defined. The most
  logical is: OM BHUUH OM BHUVAH OM SWAH OM MAHAH OM JANAH OM
  TAPAH OM SATYANG/                
  Om Gross Perception; Om Subtle Perception; Om Intuitive Perception; Om the
  Cosmic Body of Nature; Om the Body of Universal Knowledge; Om the Body
  of Light; Om the Ultimate Truth, Consciousness, Bliss.
  Other possibile interpretations are the seven meters, seven levels of heaven
  and hell, or for that matter all of the various attributes classified by
  seven.
