Homo Sapiens
HOME
All human beings belong to a group called Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens are a primitve species of mammal with a highly developed brain. For examle, early Homo sapiens' brain size was about 1590cm cubed, which is large even for people today. Modern humans today are classified as Homo sapiens sapiens.
Scientists still do not know where
Homo sapiens originated but they do know that they started appearing 120,000 to 100,000 years ago. The first examples of Homo sapiens was uncovered in France. Workmen uncovered the skeleton by accident. They lived in Africa and southwest Asia. Homo sapiens were hunter-gatherers. Homo sapiens did not come after Neanderthals but were living about the same time. The reason that Neanderthals did not survive is because Cro-Magnons wiped them out. Compared to Neanderthals Homo sapiens generally had more delicate skeletons. After 50,000 to 40,000 years ago Homo sapiens' population began to grow rapidly. Shortly after this time they began to expand their territory by migrating to new reigons. One place they migrated to was North America. They arrived to North America by an intercontinental land connection called a land bridge. Homo sapiens moved to Australia about 50,000 years ago. Since Australia was not connnected to Southeast Asia or Africa they probably traveled by simple boats or rafts.
These are the bones of Homo sapiens that were excavated from Ethiopia
