Surrender of Hiroshima and Nagasaki On August 6, 1945, a B-59 plane dropped the dreaded A-bomb on Hiroshima. Anything within five square miles was vaporized. In July, China, Britain and US warned Japan that if they did not surrender unconditionally to the Allies, something terrible would happen. US had actually threatened Japan with the A-bomb. On August 9, 1945, another B-59 plane dropped a bomb on Nagasaki. bombs effectively destroyed both cities. The second bomb destroyed everything within three square miles. This event marked the formal end of World War II. |
