Bayfield Wisconsin 2001
View entering Bayfield
My girlfriend and I had been planning on going back to Bayfield since the moment we left last year. We left after work Wednesday night and got a hotel room halfway up so we could get into Bayfield as early as we could. As it was, we got into town about noon, got a bite to eat then checked into our room at the Seagull Bay motel.
The first day we went over to some small towns to check out pottery and glass shops and also spent a bit of time in Cornucopia which has the distinction of having the northern most post office in Wisconsin :-) We also tracked down some 'waterfalls' in the area most of which were actually huge rocks with water flowing over them and weren't too big of a drop either. That night we got some tickets to Big Top Chautauqua because people always talk about it so we wanted to check it out for ourselves. It's set up in a big circus tent and it's a cross between a musical and a concert and lots of times it will be a performance detailing the history of a local town or event. The production that night was on Ashland and it was pretty cool.
Friday we bummed around Bayfield for a bit then ate at the Rittenhouse Bed & Breakfast for lunch. I gotta tell you, I had the best cheeseburger ever and one of the best desserts in a long time! After lunch we went back to Cornucopia to hike out to the sea caves again. I forgot to mention they had a big problem w/ these things called army worms or tent worms. They look like caterpillars and eat the leaves off all the trees and they were just everywhere. On the hike I was constantly picking them off me and you'd go thru big patches of trees that were missing all their leaves, it was pretty sad. I can't imagine what it will look in the fall.
Saturday we were on the ferry for the 11:00 am run and rode our bikes the 7 miles to the state park only to find out they didn't allow Mtn bikes on the trail! So we parked our bikes, hiked around and checked out the Big Bay which was absolutely beautiful. On the ride back we got caught in a brief rain shower, but we were dried off once we made it to the ferry. It was already late afternoon so we bummed around downtown again then got a bite to eat at Mama Get's. Last time there I got a burger and a huge serving of their garlic smashed potatoes which they're known for so I was really looking forward to that again. This time my serving was really small, they weren't too smashed and I couldn't taste any garlic in them! Yeah, I was pretty disappointed... After dinner we ran up to the casino to check it out then were in bed early after our long day.
Sunday we packed up and went to the Bayfield Apple Company to get some of their incredible jams and jellys and we were on our way back home.
