Welcome to VW Thing World. I made this site to chronicle the adventures of me and my wife in our 73 VW Thing. Anything you find on this site is what I have found throughout my travels of the Internet. I hope you enjoy and benefit from it, and let me know if I am missing anything. Above is a picture of our Thing at The Parts House. Moments after I parked the Thing, an H2 Hummer pulled up. I though it was really funny how much the looked alike, and how they turned there wheel the same angle as I did (that was not set up). So, observe the Old and the New! Update - January 25, 2009 Installed the used ash tray that I bought off of The Samba a few months ago. She cleaned up really nice. All it needed was a bit of 30 Weight oil to lube it up, and it slid back and forth very nicely. I also removed the Oil Temperature Gauge that was placed where the radio was suppose to go. This is actually a good thing because I always hit my knee on it when I drove. Makes driving it much more enjoyable. Update - January 22, 2009 The guy that rebuilt (so to say) my 1776cc engine screwed it up, and now the cam gear is slapping around in the case, I decided to pull that engine out and replace it with a fresh 1600cc engine that was in my back yard, tore it apart and put new pistions and cylinders on it. I installed new Type 3 tins on it for better cooling, and removed the Oil Temperature Switch that was attached as well. After a few tweaks here and there, and a trip to The Parts House, it is up and running good. All that needs to be done now is Adjust the shims on the fan shroud, re-adjust the valves and change the oil one more time before it will be good to go. Other than that, she is running excellent, and shifting great! Update - November 19, 2008 Should be getting the engine back from a local mechanic. Apparently the guy that built my 1776cc. engine (Previous Previous Owner) put the case together wrong and the engine spun a bearing. This will need to be fixed before it can run correctly. Lets see how long it takes. |
