According to Dr J E Cullis(1992),
"Dyslexia means having difficulty with words in reading, spelling and
writing - in spite of having normal intelligencee and
ability". Snowling, M. J. (2000). (The definition of dyslexia (pp 14 -28). In
Dyslexia (2nd Edition). Oxford: Blackwell) describes ¡°dyslexia as a
developmental disorder that lasts throughout life and is characterized by
reading and spelling difficulties due to a deficit in oral language skills. ¡±
It is different from simple language disorder. It means although someone can
know very long word, he or she doesn¡¯t know simple one. Therefore, many people
considered it very mysterious and didn¡¯t know the cause for a while.
If you suspect you
or your children and friends to have dyslexia, you can diagnose a suspected
person through consulting doctors or confirm symptoms. Many web sites offer
some according to the people¡¯s ages because of the difference of the people¡¯s
abilities. You have to suspect if your child experiences difficulty copying
from the board, or gets confused about following instructions when playing a
game. Many scientists state that it is important that dyslexia be discovered as
early as possible. By doing so, you can increase the possibility of making the
person a more skillful reader at an early stage.
Moreover,
there are some apparent reasons why people are dyslexic. According to BBC news,
in dyslexics, parts of the brain crucial to reading do not work properly, and
BBC reported that British Dyslexia Association said that the dyslexic brain is
different. Scientists also say that the brains of dyslexics show less neural
activity than the normal brain in reading.¡¯ ("For more information, please
refer to this page") And, it
is more common in English users because people cannot easily figure out the
pronunciation from the written spelling. For example, normal people awkward the
pronunciation ¡®-tion¡¯while they are listening to
people or reading. On the other hand, dyslexic cannot recognize the
pronunciation.
However, there
are many treatments to improve dyslexia. Above all, people should make
dyslexics can study in comfortable atmosphere. It is a good way to help the
people lessen their fear about learning to spell or read. In this case,
although dyslexics can not follow some remedial course, teachers should not
scold them. Providing children with some games instead of rigid study can boost
interest and lead them to go to places where they can find other children with
the same problems to interact with to boost their interest. Schools should also
continuously try to solve the problem through special service, such as
providing more faculties to them and remedial language skill.
Furthermore,
people ought to provide role models in order to instill courage among the
dyslexics, and constantly help dyslexics deal successfully with the problem on
and on. Actually, Many famous people such as Tom
Cruise, Thomas Edison, Agatha Christie overcame
dyslexia. In Tom Cruise¡¯s case, he suffered from dyslexia as his mother and
took the remedial classes. He is right handed, but does most things left
handed, so he tried to improve his abilities in athletics and acting more than
in other things. He never let his learning disability stop his life. In my
thought, if dyslexics lose courage, they would regard themselves as stupid and
eventually not be able to win the race. So, we should remind them to remember
that they have possibilities to success in every field.
