WHAT IS HAM RADIO?
I am often asked,"What is Ham Radio and what do you guys do?"  The answer is complex.  Ham Radio is different things to different people.  To some people, it is a way to talk to others across the country or around the world.  They see it as a way to communicate similar to CB radio.
This can lead to conversations with some very interesting people including celebrities, Congressmen, Kings and ?????.
Another means of communicating other than voice is the use of digital modes.  This used to mean Morse Code but now can be anything from Radio Teletype to Slow Scan and Full Scan Television.  Most of these modes are available to holders of the basic Ham License.
Ham Radio has no age limits.  There are nine year olds who have achieved the highest class of license and there are newly licensed eighty year olds.  Male or female, old or young, there is something for everyone.  More information can be found on the ARRL Hamsters web page.
All of the above have involved communications.  Many hams have interests which go beyond just communicating.  A favorite among hams for years has been the art of building their own equipment and experimenting with designs.   Ham Radio is the only service allowed to build their own equipment.  Many hams still opearate stations which are at least partially built by their own hands.
Experimenting is not limited to building equipment.  Many hams work with low power in remote locations or try to route signals off the moon and back to earth.  Some have even bounced signals off meteors to other hams on earth.  Space communications and experimentation is  a very popular part of the hobby.  Hams are using satellites made by hams to relay their signals.  Much of this can be done with fairly simple equipment.
