Callbook and Callsign FAQ
Q8: Where can I learn more about the history of amateur callsigns?

A8: There are a number of resources available, with varying degrees of detail.

There was an article in QST in May 1994 by WB4FDT and K1CE that was pretty good. If you're an ARRL member, you can get it online
here.

AC6V has a nice history of amateur radio, which also includes the progression of U.S. callsigns.

Bill Continelli, W2XOY, has a series of articles on radio history called "The Wayback Machine."
Issue #7 was devoted to callsigns.

None of these is really complete--each includes details that are omitted by the others. But taken together, they give a pretty good picture of the history of amateur radio callsigns in the United States.
