In the early 1980's, when "all was quiet" in Poland as a result of the martial law imposed by general Jaruzelski, Maciej Rychly hiked the quiet mountains and from the villagers there learned how to play the shepherd's whistles. In 1984 he formed the band called Kwartet Jorgi, where he played the whistles, while his brother Waldek played the guitar. The band was based in the city of Poznan, but travelled widely to collect the folk music of Poland, Ukraine and the Balkans. Even more widely it has travelled to give concerts, it has played by now as far as Brazil, Canada and Australia. Apart from this the band also creates theatre music, most recently with the experimental theatre troupe "Gardzienice" it has researched the music of ancient Greece. Maciej Rychly is also an accomplished writer published, among others, in the "Czas Kultury" magazine.
